I'd disagree - we are used to the idea that vintage colors were more subtle because we commonly see them faded or on old film. The colors were just as bright as we use today, but a bit more ruddy, and accented with softer tones.

(1899, Talouse-Latrec [sp] became famous for his brightly colored posters advertising entertainers at The Red Windmill - or, more commonly known, the Moulin Rouge.)
