I have problems with Altman's Marlowe.
I liked Aykroyd's Friday. It was a comedy but he still had Friday's look at things. "If you need some spare cash how about a paper route? It builds character, it did for me." and from the same "And on a school night, too."

I enjoyed "Brick" also.

Sincerely,

More news. All bad as far as I'm conerned.

First, they have Frank Miller set to direct the Clive Owen Marlowe. I like Clive Owen but Frank Miller is an idiot.

The television version sounds less promising with every press tidbit.

Oh well. Maybe Miller's Spirit movie will be such a disaster that they revoke his license and Marlowe/Trouble Is My Business goes to someone less comic-booky.

Well one will thrive and the other will die. I can't see TV and a major motion picutre both being produced about Marlowe in the same time frame. It would be great though!

I think Miller could make a great film if he chooses to honor the books and not let his darker sense take over the project. He loves The Spirit and respects Will Eisner so hopefully he has the same respect for Chandler.

You are being unfair since you haven't seen it yet. However I completely agree. The Work Miller has done on Daredevil and the Sin City comics show he is enamoured with film noir but it seems a cliche version and his own skewed version.
I'm a huge fan of The Spirit and I dread his take on it.
I hope he surprises me.

Sincerely,
The Wolf

The Simple Art of Murder

If you have not yet, and have interest in the genre, read the essay introducing the book: The Simple Art of Murder.

It defines the american 20th century hero, for good and/or ill. It explains the american novel of detection versus the British.

That said, I don't see how they do it, and get away with it. The best of Chandler was the WRITING. He wasn't Gardner or Christie or even Hammet, and Hammet was an excellent writer.

Chandler made more than was there, using the novel of detection as a place to write, and write as well as precious few others did or could. The stuff is literature.

Oddly enough, the only guy american enough and beat up enough to probably to do the narrative justice is Selleck, and since Marlow was no athlete, , ,

But there's no money there. Oh yeah, I'm not the only one who likes Selleck for the Chandler type hero. Robert Parker does too. He's the guy who finally finished poodle springs.
