Growing up in the Housing Projects of NY City (one of Robert Moses' finest) my siblings and I always fantasized about having a dog or cat. Those were strictly verboten by the powers that be so ixnay on the petsay. We did eventually get a "hand me down" parakeet from one of the ladies my mom cleaned for. We named him "Jimmy". We, being kids, loved, tortured and doted on that bird till the day he died. First and only time I ever saw Dad cry... while sober.

Fast forward many decades and my desire for a pet never waned. While working I never thought it right to have an animal alone at home all day. Now that I'm five years plus into retirement I finally got my first doggo. As usual Ruby is a "hand me down" 5 plus year Aussie Shepard. Sweet, food obsessed, a little nutty and the hairiest beast God ever made.

Don't let that innocent look fool you.

Mangy Hound took over my seat... MY SEAT! I swear ah gets no respect from man nor beast!

She's a gorgeous girl. Our doggo is a 'second hand' model too: Mimi was found wandering the streets in Romania, where they reckon she lived rough for about three years - while coping with health complications, including epilepsy. When she arrived in the shelter, she had milk (no pups were ever found, they were believed born dead owing to her health complications - pregnancy alone could have killed her), and she suckled a litter of abandoned kittens they had in. For a little lady life treated so badly, she's ridiculously lovely and loving.

Looks like your Ruby has truly landed on her feet - enjoy her for as long as you can, as you're no doubt well aware, the boost a pet like that can give your life is something else.

Thanks for the love folks. Yea Boyo, I'm out walking 3 times a day now. Today I wore my "Marlboro Man" shearling and my Montana Peak hat. We musta looked like a lost pair of shepherds looking for some sheep to herd! Ruby's always had a "home" but the woman who had her couldn't keep up with her anymore so we kinda took over. Edward, you, on the other hand really did a kindness. I see those vids on YouTube of lost and abandoned pets. Tears me up to see it. I got her on Halloween (no kiddin') and she's already brought a great deal of love into our house and life. Puddin' sings to her ALL the time... silly songs. The only things she's crazy for are skritches, food (duh) and fetch. Play fetch all day if you let her... oooh my arms.

Lovely dog and a great name. We have a cat of the same name, what else would you call her when she was a ruby wedding surprise gift? Worf, you berate Ruby for commandeering your chair, you should be so lucky. Did you not know, dogs have owners, cats have staff?

Good on you for bringing in a 2nd hand dog. These herding breeds, you gotta always give them a job. They love it, helps behavior so much.

It's Take Out The Trash night? Start gathering up the kitchen trash bag, "RUBY! HEEL! LET'S GO!" and take the trash out to the alley, dog all thrilled to have a job "helping" you. Use everything as a training opportunity.

This kind of dog thrives on human direction, always wanting to satisfy a job command, even something you might think frivolous. Make it a goofy game on your end. But note that praise upon correct completion is absolutely everything.

You are about to have the funnest winter in years, & more excuses for Outerwear to boot. Congratulations!

Good to see you posting more lately Worf. Sweet looking doggie, and she looks like a mans best friend.
I am a few years into retirement, and sometimes think about getting a dog During a 30 year marriage with a cat lady, and raising a daughter following in her footsteps, there was no desire for a dog in my hosehold.
I'm on my own these days and might be able to get my landlord to make an exception on the lease, as there is a no pets policy on the little studio apartment I rent.
Put up some recent pictures bundled up in some of your great jackets, out walking the dog.
Peace.

You owe me a cuppa coffee. That's the funniest thing I've seen all day! Thanks! I've friends with cats and they always love me, but my lungs don't always love them. Cats are "mercurial" to say the least. Never know what they're gonna do, when they're gonna do it or why?

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

Ain’t nothing like a dog.

We said goodbye to one of our mutts just last week. I’m not at all embarrassed to tell how I cry over the loss. He, like all our pets, was a “rescue” of entirely uncertain parentage. And the sweetest little guy ever.

So Sorry for your loss. My dog is 13 blind and has diabetes.

Love ’em while you still got ’em.

Our Sandy had neurological, orthopedic, and renal problems and had been in declining health for well more than a year. Toward the end he was mostly blind, mostly deaf, and often confused. But he had little pain, and my take on it was that for as long as I believed that if he had a vote in the matter it would be to stick around, I would honor that. I took his eventual refusal to take food and water as a vote to the contrary.

I’ll always miss him. And I’ll always be thankful for the years we had with him. He made our lives better. It was my honor to tend to him as he made his long goodbye.

Although this is my first dog, I've a friend Betty who has had several. I visited her regularly and did work around the farm. Her oldest dog, Luke, a German Shepard and the only other male from miles around, took a shine to me and followed everywhere when I was around. We clicked I guess but he was old and toothless and one day I got the call asking if I would help send him on. He wasn't my dog but I never cried so hard in my life. At one point my friend said through her tears, "I thought you were here to help me?". I know how you feel. It's rugged... I'm feel for your loss.
