Hi all,
I wont be so bold as to say G'day. Been looking on the site for a little while and have finally joined. In terms of hats, I have an Akubra 'Snowy River' thats about 15 Years old. It has had most things done to it (gone swimming, fallen off a motor bike, and usally a lot of sweat working outside) so it now looks like a true Akubra.

It has a nice hole in the front from my pinching and the shape is, well unique. I hope to get a nice Akubra 'Bogart' Fedora soon, will hope to post photos of both soon.

Will be nice to talk to you all..

Cheers

G'Day!!!

Always glad to hear from a man down under!!!! I have worn out several snowy river hats myself. Get yourself something different, you know its not like Akubra doesn't have a lot to choose from. By the way, enjoy summer or maybe I should say fall. Welcome aboard!!! Be sure to post your latest!!

Thanks all,

The new Bogart shall be the stylish inclusion to the hat collection, I would like to get some more over a period of time, but good to start with the Bogart. I can see by the site that there are a lot of hat companys out there and explore, will take some time to find my own fav's. Akubra seems to have a good name everywhere and it is great to see them being worn all over the world. I have a stockist here in Melbourne that has a large range so I am sure to be a visitor there often, the Stylemaster does look nice as well,

Hmmmmmmmmmm:D

G'day mate, great to have you aboard. I've got three Stylemasters, they're a great lid. Look-wise, they're very similar to the Bogart, I wish Akubra still made the sky grey colour though!

:eek:fftopic: It's been too long since I've been to Melbourne (three years), not a finer city anywhere for music, comedy, theatre, food or restaurants. Big welcome to a fellow Aussie!

:eek:fftopic: continued....

That’s why we love living here but you forgot one thing...Sport. With the F1 here in March and the Football season also starting in late Feb (pre season), it is just sport and more sport here in Melb. We also pride ourselves on looking sharp and having many influences from around the world to guide us in our fashion trends.

Maybe that could be a new Topic, the sharpest city in the world; my vote would be for Melbourne........

...not that Sydney is bad, its just that Melbourne seems to have more culture about it and is known for its fashion. If you have ever attended the Spring Racing Carnival here in Melbourne you will know what I mean, but I am intrested in other places around the world, where is the place where to dress down means a frown on the people in the town. lol

I had a Santone Fawn Snowy River I bought in 1991, that had been used several times as a water bucket in the river. Akubras make great buckets. Then you just rebash it, pop it back on your head and let the summer sun dry it out. It got nice and soft and unique -- a true old friend. I agree an Akubra does not take on those legendary Akubra qualities until it has been naturally abused.

One Too Many
the old divide

I was born in Sydney, and lived there for over 20 years mostly as an adult.
it's a great place to live if you are young and callow, and not shall we say concerned with anything other than the physical. I went to Melbourne recently, and was really surprised at the vibrance of the artistic side of life, a much more European lifestyle. I believe the new licensing laws in regard to starting up your own bar has really kickstarted things. At the airport on the way home there were coffee shops that charged normal prices and I was able to buy a bottle of orange juice to drink on the plane for $2.50. This is unbelievable...at Sydney's privatised commercial hell-hole it would have cost $25, you probably would have had to pay more to sit down. The new system about arrivals is nice too...it is forbidden for private cars to stop and pick up passengers, and this is enforced by security guards, and all free parking spots within a mile of the place have been roped off. The only way out of the airport is to take a taxi or a bus to where your friends or relatives are waiting, or they have to pay exorbitant parking rates.
Says it all about what sydney has become really.

I saw a sticker on the back of a truck the other day on the Harbour Bridge. It read: "NSW - the Revenue State." It would be funny it wasn't so true.

Having travelled around a bit, I have to say there's no place like Australia. All the cities have their own unique characters, and Melbourne is a knockout for culture and the arts. I love Sydney with its beautiful harbour, it's home - but, sad to say, it's got a pathetic attitude and it's ridiculously overpriced here. Everything - land, houses, clothes, food, it's all way too expensive.

A study made the news a couple of weeks back that revealed that, in relation to the average income of its residents, Sydney is more expensive to live in than London or New York. A New Yorker could much more easily afford to buy an apartment or house in New York than a Sydneysider could here. Yep, it's out of control.

Let me Reminisce

I got off a plane in Sydney in July of 1968 in a snow storm to boot. I was on leave from the jungle in S.E. Asia (Viet Nam) and dressed in my Khakis to go along with it!! I was greeted with nothing but kindness and hospitality from everyone I came in contact with. I have nothing but great memories of your country and carry them with me to this day. Whether your from Sydney or Melbourne it doesn"t matter to me. To quote a famous American General from WWII, "In a bar fight or a war, I'll take a man from down under watching my backside anyday". I'm certain I would be surprised at the changes that have happened since I was there. Some for the good, some for the worst. BUT, you have my total respect nonetheless. After all, we are former members of a great fraternity, former Penal Colonies!!

One Too Many
R&R

I remember my mother found a couple of US sailors sitting disconsolately at the back of church one Sunday morning in about 67, and brought them home for a decent home-cooked meal, they ended up sleeping in hammocks under the house for about a week, because they didnn't want to go out drinking and whoring with their older buddies. Nice guys, always wonder what happened to 'em.

Yup,

Thanks all for your sentiments. For those in the US and around the planet there has always been a rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne or more NSW and Vic. It is engrained into our culture. But in the end we are all Aussies and we love being out there on the world stage. I suppose that’s why we love our Akubra hats; it again shows Australia off to the world stage.
Really both cities are great, Sydney has an amazing harbour, beaches while Melbourne has nightlife, sport, and a more European based culture and we all love to hang it on Adelaide......(Aussie Joke)

Still after nominations for the sharpest dressed city in the world or should I set a new topic......over to the masses.....

Cheers

Hi folks

I'm a newbie here also but have been reading the forum over the past week. I come to you live from outside Nashville Tn in a little city called Lebanon.

I would be curious to get some feedback about your hat as soon as you get it because I am trying to decide on either the "bogart" from Akubra or the "Jaxon Bogart" from another site. I'm a huge fan of the style but don't want to spend in excess of $100 on my second hat. My first one is a hand made "Wormser" from First Avenue in Nashville. It has a 4" crown and 2" brim, size 58(71/4), genuine fur felt, trimmed snap brim. The old gentleman that made it has retired now and closed the shop so I can't get one from there.

Any reviews, pics, or suggestions would be great.

Thanks

Hi Playitagainsam,

I have the Bogart now and all I can say is that I am very happy with it. It is the Charcoal Grey with the same color band. It is very nice to wear and has a great feel about it. I am unable to post a pic at this time but will work on it for all of you, along with a photo of my old Akubra 'Snowy River'.

The Bogart is a sharp looking hat that tops off a suit very nicley, I havent tried it in more casual clothing yet but I am sure it will do the job nicely.

Cheers,

Further info

Thanks for the response Roaring Days. By the way, I forgot to say welcome. Also could you offer any dimension information on the lid and whether the brim is trimmed? One last thing also how does the brim hold its position? Does it snap up/down?

Thanks again

OK,

The brim is about 6cm and is trimmed with the same fabric and the band. There is a slight snap down on the hat on the front and a small rise towards the back. This I think makes it look very sleek as far as a hat can...

Cheers,
