Martha Stewart usually sells some cute vintage style wrapping paper at Kmart--couldn't find a picture online but I'll try to snap one when I unearth the wrap later this month.

My great-grandma always wrapped packages in white tissue paper and red and green thick yarn ( you know, the kind you used to use in school art projects?). I may do that this year...if I ever find time to go shopping!

And yes, Target has some great picks this year for wrapping paper!

The Sunday Funny Papers make great vintage wrapping paper.
lol lol lol

That reminds me..when my husband was a Marine recruiter, he pretty much lived at the office. Henceforth, he rarely had time to shop, much less go out and buy pretty paper to wrap my presents in. Christmas morning, I find my presents wrapped in newspaper and taped with Marine Corps stickers. :D

It was pretty special.;)

There is always the real vintage wrapping paper--brown paper.

Tied up with string?? ;)

That's what I use, without exception. It's cheap, always available, and a vintage fountain pen and a neat rubber stamp goes a long way to personalize it. Usually mine have some whimsical return address and an USAAF Hap Arnold on them.

Family members joke, 'Hrm, I wonder who this one is from...'

I buy white wrapping paper and use silver, red and green acrylic paint with a palette knife to decorate it.

Is anything as quaint???

Not that I can think of, though white paper with red ribbon comes in second in my book. As I understand it, that was a very common wrapping at one time.

I guess you could say that those are some of my favorite things.....;) lol

My stepfather-in-law always wraps gifts in ACE hardware bags closed with duct tape and written on with black marker.
We always know his presents under the tree.

Sincerely,
The Wolf

Hi Ruby,

If you mean the heavy plain brown paper for packages, you can get postal wrap at staples or office depot. They also have kraft wrapping paper. I really like that thin brown/tan package wrap you get on international packages but don't know where to find any stateside. Maybe Michael's would have something similar?

Here is a nice snippet on vintage wrap I recently read: http://www.homecompanionmag.com/finders_keepers/spotlight.asp

(subscribers click here: http://www.homecompanionmag.com/december_january_08/finders_keepers/retro_wrap.asp)

Pina,Thank you so much!
I am definitely doing that this year and I may just make it tradition from now on.

Miss Brill, my goal is to work the phrase "For all my Christmas gilding..." into a conversation today.

Is that a Martha article? That woman'll gild anything that isn't nailed down!

Use paper grocery bags. Pull / cut along the seams, flatten, wrap with the printing on the inside. Works for most gifts, up to the size of a large shoebox.
