Was in Hay-on-Wye this weekend and picked up these - a bit of a departure for me, but I thought that the forum might like to see them!

I guess both are 1940s; the stiff collar has the CC41 mark.

I like these detachables.

Here are a couple of pics from a thrift store in Boston.

David Page Coffin's book on shirtmaking from Taunton has a section on separate collars and making your own.
Could you scan and post this section?

I am interested in modifying modern shirt collars to vintage specs.
Thanks.

Many of the "proper" Jermyn Street shirtmakers offer them, in a limited range of styles, as well as UK legal outfitters such as Stanley Ley and Ede and Ravenscroft, and also the Chancery Lane branch of T.M. Lewin (where I have got several of mine.) I have a couple made for me by Ravi tailors (one of which I am wearing today, and which has featured in the "custom shirts" thread) and am thinking of trying Jantzen next. I also occasionally have luck on eBay or in the local charity shops/vintage clothing stores. (There's an old thread entitled "show us your vintage shirts" which features one I found fairly recently, with three matching collars!)

Nice looking collars, but where do you find shirts that are compatible with them?

I just looked for a shirt at Goodwill that was a band collar with the outer flap added. A band collar shirt would have saved me a step, but I did not find one in my size.
I pulled the stitches on the collar and then resewed it as a band collar.
I removed the top button and added a button hole in its place, and added a button hole at the back center of the collar.

Have you ordered from Jantzen?
I am seriously considering ordering from this company. I need a decent shirt with French cuffs and a point collar.

I have ordered from Jantzen, and I am very happy with what they sent me. The turnaround time was (I think) 4-6 weeks, but if you can live with that, I say give them a shot. I ordered a standard dress shirt (in blue broadcloth, 4 inch point collar) and the measurements came out fine, and the fabric quality was excellent.

Members at other forums have used Jantzen a lot, and the consensus seems to be that they provide incredible value for the money, though they can be a bit difficult to deal with sometimes. Lost orders, poor communications, and enormous wait times have not been uncommon, although Jantzen seems to be getting better about these things in recent months.
