Looks good, Shamus. I'm guessing there are still little reminders of the old bash, toward the rear of the crown, but they're so subtle they don't show in photos. That's the way it usually goes, anyway.

FBI Story [Stewart hat pic]

Here is a pic of the hat from FBI Story.

Its a sweet hat and I myself would love one like it. I just recieved an Adventurebilt by Steve Delk and it is a wonderful hat. But I think I will be on the lookout for one like Mr. Stewart is wearing also.

I must say that this is a real eye opener for other members here, to see how vintage felt can be re-shaped as you require.

Good job Shamus.

I didn't realize it's so easy to do either. I might not pass over a few styles from now on, because I didn't like the way they look... when all it takes is a few minutes on the tea kettle...

That's a Levi's 506XX jacket he's sporting as well.

I'm not sure it is. The collar looks too big and the pocket has a rivit on it. I don't think the 506xx had rivits on the pockets....

Naptha

What role does naptha play in the reshaping of a felt? I've always just steamed them.

Naptha is a fairly powerful solvent that was the original dry cleaning fluid. It disolves grease and oils from sweat and the dirt tends to come out of the felt or fabric with the disolved grease or oils. Some of the members are adept at using naptha to clean furfelt hats as a remarkeable renewal to many hats.

Dry cleaning is not the same as washing and can't remove sugars or carbohydrates such as that from food mishaps, when taking a garment to the drycleaners you have to point out any such spills so they may be spot treated. If the sugars or carbs remain in the garment and if pressed the heat of the press cooks the sugar or carbs and a brown spot appears on the fabric, and I think it's not posible to get that out easily.:fedora:

Sincerely,

Hey RBH...

I went to school in Southern MO about an hour from Ar-Kansas.

Update on the newtome open road. I did an second steaming and moved the pinch up a bit like Jimmy's hat.

And.. I just picked up another Open Road! This one's super nice, a stetson 25! with the box, windcord, and cowboy on the bow! Unfortunatly it's too small for me, but couldn't pass up the hat.

I did notice it's a little bit.. well hints of green in it compaired to my Open road. Is mine bleached out or did they make with a hint of green? It's not green, it's like mine, only with a hint of green.

How small is too small, shamus? And do you have that new one in your possession yet? If so, could you post pictures? A greenish OR? Will wonders never cease?

It's a 7 1/8 wide oval. It's not green. I'm just saying there's hints of green. I guess it's a silver belly like mine.. only darker ... with the hint of green.

Just got it tonight. I'm not sure though the big difference between say my 3X open road and Stetson 25 Open road. The 25 feels softer.

I want it, I want it! Great hat very classy.

Here you have Mister Jimmy Stewart as FBI agent Chip Hardesty, who is under cover posing as a Cattle Buyer, and trying to find out who's behind the killing of the local Native American oil well owners in Oklahoma.

Thought I'd update a photo of me enjoying my new to-me Open Road.

Having a cup of joe at Hermosa Beach.

Way cool!

shamus, the hat looks great. I have worn mine most of the day and love it more and more.
I have orderd me a straw Open Road that I plan to rebash into a fedora for wearing this summer. I havent been able to fine a straw that I liked. So I think the Open Road style fedora fits what I am looking for.
I guess we need to start us up an Open Road club.
Brotherhood of the Open Road... dont sound to bad !
