It could be cow. There is thinner leather in the highest part of the back.
I got a hole there when a cat tried to jump up and fell down and put a claw into the jacket and got hanging there until I helped it
Rest of the jacket is very very hard and it squeaks alot.
I did cover it in chao-co-line (spelling) once to soften it, but that's all I have ever done.
Yeah, sounds like Cow is probably it. Often you do find a softer panel here or there - variances of the natural hide.... my Brando style has a markedly softer panel on the underside of the collar. and ho, yes, I know all about what cats can do to leather. I have a beautiful leather chair that is well scratched from a time when one of mine developed a thing for sleeping on the back of it, but she was too small to be able to jump up and land there on her feet - lots of scrabbling..... arrgghh.
