Maybe this is heresy. Maybe it's just an ignorant newbie question. But does the front brim snap down like some of the toquilla straw hats and felt fedoras, or no?

I like the looks of the hat. Quite handsome. But I'm thinking I'd rather wait for the natural to come out.. instead of the Toast straw.

It's a bit stiff but it can be snapped down if that is what you really want to do.
A little steam would soften it up and make it easier.
It will probably be another few weeks before my natural colored hats show up.

Has anyone had any luck reshaping an open Road brim with their hands ? I received one that unfortunately is not perfectly rounded in the brim. The front tilts forward a little. I like to wear my OR with the brim up and perfectly round.

I have been trying to use the edge of a table to get the right look. Any other ideas ?

Oh also have a plastic fedora carrying case with the perfect brim mold. I thought of maybe overstuffing it so the brim in pressed hard against the mold ?

Thanks

Are you using steam or just bare hands?I beieve it will take steam to fine tune it.

Just bare hands. I hesitate to do steam on such a nice hat with no experience. Although over stuffing my fedora case seemed to help a little as it pressed the hat tightly against the pre curved rim of the case.

Try it--I don't think the steamy room will make much difference. But, you should try. I prefer more direct steam like from a kettle.

By the way has anyone tried re shaping a hat in a steamy bathroom then left to dry ? Recommended or not ?
I can't get the picture out of my mind of a bunch of old guys in towels (only) taking a "steam" in NY... All wearing their old fedoras and discussing their "creases"

Sorry for implanting this image in all of your brains. Eye Bleach!

I would like to know the differences in shantung and the others as well.

The Open Road is a classic style and we make it in many materials. In Straw or summer weight we make it in a 6x Shantung that has been in the line for years. This thread is talking about is the 10X shantung. It is made of a higher grade and is similar to our straw westerns in quality and weight. We also make it in two natural materials. A twisted Panama and a Natural Hemp Milan weave. I personally wear the Hemp hat quit a bit with the brim snapped down in front. As far as felt goes we make the standard western weight Open Road and a Royal Open Road done in a dress weight. So as you see we make a lot of Open Roads. The closest to the old tyme I would buy the Premiere Statoliner open crown and crease it the way I want. The Open Road and Statoliner are kissing cousins.

Moving and finishing Collage and working the territory. Just when I thought I had a handle on it they Added Mississippi to the States I cover. It is great though I drive about 1,000 miles a week and have seen a lot a areas that I would not have seen without this job. I guess I need to come by more often.
