One of the regulars, Jon11 from Ireland, asked me to commence this thread on his behalf and help post some pics of his new “Rail Coat”- made by Johnson Leathers. He assured me he would step in to answer any questions about the jacket, fit, leather, details, etc. (I’m just helping out here, and have no involvement with the jacket, but I thought this style of jacket, process and the unique materials might be of interest to some of the members.)

Looks great, I think that's the 2.5oz stuff. I wonder how true the colour is in that photo? It's usually a bit darker than that isn't it?

I am again impressed by JL's custom work. I had them repair my GW A-2 zipper for me. While in the shop I checked out the standard jackets and while the quality was top notch the styles were too modern and ordinary for my taste. It now saddens me that just as I am about to leave San Francisco I discover they can produce beauties like this. Maybe I just have time to get them to make another of these? What was the ballpark price and turnaround time?

Great looking jacket. The leather looks soft and flexible. I especially like the Harris Tweed pattern and wish I could have chosen it for my Aero. I was told that Aero just uses what they have in stock and you can't chose a specific tweed pattern.

Thanks Michael, for posting the pictures I am a bit of a computer (novice and don't have a clue) The process was started off a few months back and for me San Francisco to N. Ireland was a non starter. However with Alan's assurance this was a smooth process. I sourced the Tweed direct from the manufacturers in Scotland and probably have enough for four jackets. BTW that wont be happening according to my wife. The leather is Horween Vermont Expresso and is slightly darker than the photographs but full of character etc. The thread used is a cream colour and the buttons old style horn. All in all I am very happy and with Alan's mock up fits me perfectly. I cannot recommend Alan Johnson highly enough, he is patient, his attention to detail is fantastic and as well as gaining a fantastic jacket have made a friend. Any questions just shout.

BTW got permission from the Harris Tweed company to use their label which Alan was more than happy to oblige. Just wish I could put up clorer images of the leather character and grain. This for me adds to its look.

Lovely piece. Can't help but think that with a better web presence, Johnson would be a serious player in the market here. I've never dealt directly with them, but I have a second hand D-pocketg style which is a beauty.
