New Pocket Watch

Well, new to me anyway. It is a vintage Smiths Empire which has been fully rebuilt, ultrasonically cleaned and properly oiled or so the advert said. Anyway the detailed, supersized pictures convinced me. I've decided to make a leather strap for it so that it can loop onto my belt then hang it securely in my trouser/pants pocket. I'll make the strap removable so I can attach an Albert chain or similar for wearing with a waistcoat.

Nice looking watch. Be careful and have it serviced by a real watchmaker every few years. This is a rarer watch because they were lower cost, used and abused, and now need to be taken care of. Fewer jewels means the pivots will wear out easier, due to unavoidable dust buildup. When not in use keep it under glass or somewhere dust is limited.

No jewels at all. I love these dollar watches, until recently I had two which were my daily wear watches (one needed a clean and the other I accidentally dropped on a hardwood floor! ) Their simple design and robust parts make them pretty tough. Unfortunately, I can't find anyone to repair or even clean them locally. There was one watchmaker, who was a Finnish soldier during WWII, who would but he died a few years ago. Most consider them not worth their time.

Indeed, tough to find good watch service these days. I found a good company for higher grade watches online, pretty good and reasonably priced service (here: http://www.horologist.com/ ). I sent them one of my older Elgins, 1880s era pocket watch which hadn't been serviced in ages. $100 later it was back home in a month, working and looking great with a new main spring, full service, and case polish, so I can't complain.

Enjoy it, just be careful to make sure it's keeping good time. I've had the unfortunate lateness due to a watch stopping once or twice, usually my fault for neglecting a wind however.

I have been getting all my watches fixed and serviced as it is so hard to find a real watchmaker. The fellow who does my work is well into his 80s and I doubt I will ever meet a better watchmaker.
