With an uptick in new members who are here either to just sell things or to relieve other members of their cash without supplying the goods, we will remove any classified post by anyone who hasn't taken the time to get to know the forum and all it offers. You'll need 20 posts at a minimum to participate in the classified forum as a seller from here on out.

Considering the high value some jackets have do sellers insist in Pay Pal merchant? I mean a sell/buy in UK I will do a face to face, but paying ££££ and not getting the goods I would be pissed off. What prompted this post?

I suppose PayPal goods and service should provide some level of protection (I am not familiar with the details of what it provides) but it also includes some fees and can be classified as taxable income if it's enough $$$. So better deals ad more straightforward transactions are why people like to use friends and family.

The trouble is other than face to face with cash there's not really any kind of foolproof method that doesn't require some kind of leap of faith on either the seller's or buyer's part to trust the other side will take care of their end of the deal.

Haha “relieve other members of their cash”. Guess it’s back to PayPal g&s for the time being. This has saved me in the past when someone tried scamming me in my search for a roof rack for a semi-vintage car. Very niche racket. Full refund from PayPal fortunately!

OK. I feel this policy is reasonable. I recently posted a classified, but did have the intention of getting more involved.

Paying via PayPal G&S or Venmo G&S is best practice. I've never done otherwise and never been scammed in 14 years buying and selling online.

As a newbie, there’s an inherent bootstrap issue making 20 high value posts difficult to achieve:

I can ask a question, but often it’s already been answered so no need to post. Or if I ask anyway, I might get my favorite response: There’s a search function. So it’s tough to find genuine questions to ask.

But…

I’m not an expert so can’t answer any questions. So it’s tough to find questions to answer.

What’s a newbie to do?

16 more to go…. :)

I'm not sure how many scams this will prevent after the inevitable influx of low quality posts to check the box; but maintaining a cautious optimism and interested to see how this plays out.

Have bought jackets "naked" off the forum using PP F&F, thankfully never been scammed. Amazing what an hour of DD scanning their post history, etc, does before sending a stranger $700+ USD over the internet.

It depends exactly what @scotrace means by “posts.” What you’re referring to is new threads, which I don’t believe is what he meant, since as you correctly pointed out starting redundant threads is…highly discouraged (I feel your pain — the search function is not exactly the panacea people seem to think it is. Still, definitely good to put in your due diligence, particularly when new to the community).

I would assume scotrace is referring to the “messages” count visible on our profiles, which I believe includes comments on a thread as well as PMs? Honestly it has always slightly confused me. If this is correct, and the new policy is being coded into the website, it feels easy to game by spamming another account with messages. If it’s just being monitored manually, that still presents the first issue but with the added complication of being labor-intensive to enforce.

Would love to know if I’m correct on this or totally off base!

I participate in a photography forum (Fred Miranda) that has a 30 post limit before you’re even allowed to buy from the forum. But they have ample opportunities for newbies to post through putting up examples of their photography for comments and critiques, so reaching 30 posts feels fairly painless. And it’s a super positive atmosphere, so there’s rarely any overt or harsh critiques.

I wonder if the bartenders could do something similar here? Encourage newbies to post what they have and what they’re interested in?

15 more to go!!! :)

It really shouldn’t be too hard to get the amount of posts needed.

There are plenty of different threads between all the forums new people can participate in

Things like “What jacket are you wearing today” and threads like that.

I think it’s a great start, but it seems to be that a lot of scams are from old hacked accounts. Nothing really to be done about those I guess. But it’s good practice to check accounts post history to look for anything suspicious.

A very sensible decision.

Another two places that I joined some two years ago, Discord channels, have a mandatory fit pic & short introduction requirement that the moderators then verify.

This doesn't, of course, need to be a proper WAYWT photo & people often upload silly things like their baby photos or photos of pets or stuff like that because the whole point is only so that the moderators can see that they're real people.

Until they have provided this, new members are given a limited access to the forum that still allows them to use all the less sensitive sub-forums & interact with others, which basically acts as a (number) post count verification and can eventually grant them full access.

Another way to prove their legitimacy is to contact the mods with references, such as their eBay or Grailed accounts or their IG that is often a very good character reference in itself.

For example, this forum and the insane post count that I have here had often served me as a major reference source, when I'd sell something elsewhere.

Scammers are mostly always extremely dense and clueless about what they're selling and are absolutely not capable of passing the vibe check.
