Good Morning Everyone,

New guy here. As a kid, I loved all kinds of hats and always wanted one as a souvenir on family trips. My teenage and college years were mostly baseball caps and the occasional Bass Pro/Beach-bought straw to wear outside while fishing in the Georgia heat. Still wear the Bass Pro one now at 45 years old.

Along the way, I picked up a used brown Stetson (might be an Open Road-not sure), a flat cap and a Tyrolean hat on a trip to Germany. Wore them off an on in cooler weather, but my jobs at the time didn't really allow dress hats. I spent a career in Law-Enforcement, retired to take a job working with special needs children and coach sports in our school system (back to the baseball and straw hats then) and now work full-time at a local funeral home, plus I'm a Permanent Deacon in the RCC.

I now wear a suit everyday, so dress hats are a must when working graveside services, etc. It has renewed my interest in hats. I wear the Stetson all the time now and just ordered another Stetson on-line in black. It's a Prof- fairly inexpensive and in a fedora shape. I figured it would match the black suits and clerical wear I usually have on better than a brown one. There are no hatters anywhere near where I live, so we'll see how ordering on-line works. Even the Belks/TJMax stores around here don't carry cheap fedoras to see how I'd look in them. It's a dress hat wasteland down in South Georgia. Looks like on-line is my only option.

Anyway, just wanted to post and say hi! I've been going through all of the "hat of the day" pics to get some ideas as to what I'd like and what styles look nice to me. I have lots to learn. ;)

Hope everyone has a great day ahead,

Deacon Eric

Welcome Deacon. Lots of hats to see hear including some great blacks...and even some bowlers and homburgs for that little something different. A lot of vintage hats to find and there are several custom hatters across the US and abroad who can fix you up with very smart headwear as well.

Welcome to The Lounge! Sounds like you’ve had an interesting professional life.

Personally, I think a black homburg with a simple gutter crease and without pinches would be my choice. It’s a somber and formal hat without the “costume” tendencies (in the US) of a top hat.

Welcome, Deacon! I’m new here as well, and be warned - you may find that ordering hats becomes more than a hobby...

I consider myself a child of deprivation as my parent's would NOT buy me the coonskin cap I dreamt about. Davy Crockett was my absolute hero and I was crushed by their insistent no. I saw one in a vintage shop in Montana last year and was going to buy it but it was cheap and ratty. I thought after all these years when I buy the damn coonskin hat it is going to be a good one.
I worked with an Irish gentleman that had a fox version of the Davy Crockett hat. Wore it all winter. He refused to say how much he paid for it. But justified it by saying he has wanted one all his life. He bought it in Banff so he did pay a fair penny for it. Looked like this one.

That hat is a wow! My first thought is that if I wore that out here on the Left Coast I would be picketed by PETA.....or worse!

I know a guy called Barry who makes this kind of hat, he's quite famous for making/wearing cat skin hats (yes you read correctly) he's often known as the Catman of Kangaroo Island. There's some interesting folk downunder, but we do have a massive feral cat problem here.

If I wore a dead cat on my head even my very patient and long suffering wife would be forced to draw the line.

I have an extreme allergic reaction to cats, enough so that it almost cost me my life a couple times. Ain't no way I'm going near one either. Anyways, sorry for the slightly off-topic run, not a hat I'd suggest for anyone lol.

Maybe he’s the guy who started that phrase....”the only good cat is a good hat”.
