Also, depending on your size you can peruse Ebay for "wooden hat blocks" they always list some, mostly in smaller sizes but you can find a block profile that suits your tastes whereas HatShapers is limited to just a few offerings.
Yes, thanks. The ones I've seen on eBay are just too much dough for me right now. I'll keep looking.

I'd also like to find some new hat boxes that are like original hat boxes, except maybe more durable, that don't cost an arm and a leg. And, where can I find those nifty laces that came with hat boxes to to the lid shut? One of my boxes is missing them, another has one torn short.

I buy boxes from Michaels (the craft store) They sell a heavy duty box with an integral lid/velcro closure. You have to fashion your own insert if you want one. They are usually on sale or you can download a coupon for 40-50% off.

Thanks. Yes, I like the idea of having the inserts, but haven't found any new boxes with them. The used ones on eBay are as much as hats! I will keep looking, and noodling.... Maybe there's a business opportunity here. :)

I have looked for hat boxes for my hat making business. Cardboard box companies make them but they are expensive and require large quantities to make them economical. I buy a standard hat box from ULine and fashion my own inserts. It is cheap but time consuming......but beats laying out a grand on a box supply.

Thanks. Could you please post a pic of a box with inserts you've made?

The last used block I was watching on eBay went for more than what a new one would cost..north of $200. Large size blocks don’t come around often and they go for more than they should.

I'm tempted to make one. I have a rather large metalworking lathe and I have turned wood on it. I could glue up some maple and turn a nice "head," as long as spherical/cylindrical would be useful, which I think it would.

I’m a long oval and most everyone is an oval of some sort. If our heads were cylinders blocks would be much easier to make and cheaper too.

Yes, pricing can be all over the map. I have been fortunate in picking up decent blocks for great pricing.....but nothing I could count on. Just used Ebay searches to fill some holes in my collection or add an interesting shape. I just picked up a bunch of flanges for on average $50 each.

Three of my hats: my old newsboy cap, my new (and only fedora so far) and a unique Afghan Pakol hat sent to me while my brother-in-law was deployed in Afghanistan

What type of fedora?
Nothing special. C-Crown crushable wool felt from the Village Hat Shop. Had to start somewhere and I knew nothing much about the fedora when I ordered it. A good friend wore his father's (and we're both way old) nice old Mallory to coffee a couple of weeks ago and I admired the style. Thanks for the welcome!

Welcome aboard! A lot of us started with a similar wool felt hat. Those hats are a great way to start into wearing a fedora without spending too much.

It’s a great site: hope you enjoy your stay.

Just a thought, but perhaps you could contact Ultrafino to see if they could extend some kind of wholesale or bulk pricing for their box? They sell what appears to be a very nice hat box, with inserts. I just ordered one, and I can let you know what I think of it once it arrives. The single, retail price is $25. Or, maybe they can tell you the name of their supplier?
