New Look to an Old Hat

I had several thin ribbons in OR style grey hats, so I decided to put a new ribbon and get a new look on an old Knox that I had to stretch a bit to fit the old noggin. Majormoore placed some very old vintage ribbon he had in his shop on this old Knox, a favorite of mine. I like the look

New look, vintage ribbon and hat. I rarely see anything but solid ribbon on a fedora and maybe everyone doesn't like the look, but I like it on this hat. The silver of the ribbon almost exactly matches the silver brim binding. The darker color is a green if it doesn't show well.

It looks like it was meant to be that way.

It's amazing the difference a ribbon can make in the look of a hat, and the amount you wear it.

Warbird, That's a great look. I've always wondered why the tradition developed that felt hats had solid ribbons, and straw hats were given striped (or patterned) ones. Well done! :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap

I also agree with Dinerman.....it looks like it was meant to be.

Can we see the side shot of the Bow?

There is a date on the spool of 1948, and had a cost of .50 cents for the 18 yards on the spool, I had to pull off about 6 yards due to the old pin that was stuck into the ribbon and was rusty.

That's cool, warbird. Nice old ribbon can be hard to come by. The major found a good application for that length of it. Any idea when it was made?

Don't you just hate it when they do that?

So as not to waste it, I've used ribbon with pin holes for crafting bows, making certain that the holes were on the inside layers.

I have this rust-stain removal stuff -- Whink brand -- that has worked well on garments whose deteriorating metal buttons had done their damage. I'd imagine it would also work on rayon/cotton blend grosgrain. It takes but a drop.

I happen to have a spool of 12-ligne in blue with maroon stripe which I bought for five bucks a week ago from a local old-junk dealer who said she thinks it dates from the 1930s but offered as verification of that nothing other than what the person from whom she had bought had told her. But a burn test indicates that it indeed has natural-fiber content, and no polyester.

That hat looks terrific with a new ribbon, Warbird. I agree, let's see the bow as well.
Changing the color ribbon and/or the width can make an old hat look new again.
I have searched Dallas for old ribbon with no success. I'd especially like to find some like Tonyb describes and some in wider widths. If anyone has more suggestions, please post them.

A very handsome hat. In a book around here I have a few advertisements from 1952 for the Hat Corporation of America (You know the ones - "As healthy as they're handsome.") and a few of the illustrated hats are felts with striped ribbons. It's a nice look, and sort of dresses down the hat a bit.
