Hello! I was very glad to find this group of people who like to add some of the past to their present.
I've been a "throwback" for quite a while - started with pocket watches in high school, shaving with a straight razor in grad school (grew and started waxing the moustache then too), and finally started wearing hats when my firstborn went off to college. Not quite into fedoras - the closest I come is a trilby and I prefer homburgs. But I enjoy people who appreciate yesterday.

Hi, I too have introduced myself in the Powder Room but not formally to the rest of the Lounge. I came across the lounge by accident, while researching a particular red lipstick. I found not only the information I needed but so much more.

My favorite decades are the 1930s-1940s, but some of my interests extend back to the 20s and forward to the 50s too. I’m a 3rd generation Los Angelino living in nor Cal. I remember as a small child driving with my folks into downtown LA and being fascinated by the “superman building” (city hall) and all the old neon signs. I also had great times with my grandpa & his cronies at the track (Santa Anita & others), when there were still a lot of older men about who wore fedoras and smoked cigars. I think I was born with this love of the past and an interest in history. I ended up getting a MA in history and work in architectural history and historic preservation. At one time I thought about using my researching skills to be a consultant or set dresser for films but didn’t pursue that.

I live in a 1923 house furnished with Art Deco furniture & “stuff” with some 40s tropical Deco mixed in. It’s still very much a work in progress. I do dress vintage all the time; my clothes are pretty much all 1940-1945, and I am especially fond of the wartime 40s.

It sounds so boring to say my hobby is reading, but it’s true. Mostly mystery and detection of the Golden Era, from Anthony Berkeley, Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers to hardboiled – Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Cornell Woolrich, etc.; biographies and history of all kinds. And I collect old Nancy Drew books and period magazines. Musically, big band and swing is what I am most fond of, but also listen to a lot of Cole Porter; 30s crooners; classic Hawaiian; Sinatra’s 50s recordings; Elvis, Louis Jordan, Billie Holiday, and some 30s-50s western artists (Bob Wills, Hank Williams).

Most of all, I love movies from the 30s-40s! Film Noir is my favorite genre, but I also love screwball comedies, crime pictures like High Sierra, dramas, Abbott & Costello, WWII pictures, 4-hanky weepers with Bettie Davis, The Thin Man series, and Barbara Stanwyck in anything. Plus vintage cartoons, especially the classic Warner Loony Toones Hollywood characature ones. I’m also a great fan of the Poirot series with David Suchet. And I’ll admit here among friends that I am way too familiar with every episode of Leave it to Beaver.

Short list of my weaknesses: classic cars; streamlined ships, locomotives, airplanes, busses, house trailers & streetcars (like the F-Line cars in San Francisco); wooden speedboats; nose art & WWII aircraft; 30s-40s jukeboxes; radios; Deco chrome appliances, vintage stoves & refrigerators; diners; old neon, barkcloth drapes, Streamline Moderne architecture; vintage cocktails, and spectator pumps!

Okay - I’ve gone on and on. I just love the Golden Age, and am glad to be here. It is nice to meet all of you! :)

Hello, I´m new!

Hello ladies,
I have been a silent reader for some weeks and thought it´s time to properly say hello! I am from Germany and found this community by chance. I am a professional costume designer and spend all my time sewing & researching. My favourite periods used to be late 18th century & 1870s but I was hit by the phenomenon of era switching and am now completely obsessed with 20s and 30s clothing (and hair of course). I am an active reenactor and quite concerned about authenticity so I like to handsew my 18th c. stuff.
I have just begun researching & sewing 20s clothing but have no pics yet to show you but will hopefully have some soon. Oh, and I recognize there are some ladies from the lj vintagehair community here! So that´s it about me, you are welcome to ask if you would like to know anything about me.
Best wishes,
Frl. Wunder

Welcome Fraulein Wunder! I promise you will love it. :D
You're a professional Costume designer? That is like my dream job.
I'd like to ask you some questions if you don't mind. For some reason, I am not able to write you a personal message (PM), so I would like to ask you if you have AIM or MSN Messenger?
Thanks.

Welcome Fraulein Wunder! Nice to have you as part of our community!

Oh, and until a new person has 15 posts, they can't receive PM's. Just get busy posting, it shouldn't take long :)

I recall your posts too Nashoba. Welcome back indeed!

And I love the new picture.

Thanks! That pic was taken last November right before the hubby deployed. I made that dress :) and the jewelry is vintage and was a gift from his grandfather. It belonged to his grandma. My hair gave me a heck of a time though! Took me a couple of hours to figure out. I had this image in my head and I just HAD to create it....

Hello everyone!

I'm sorry it took me a bit to get over here to make a proper introduction. I've mostly been hiding over in the powder room. I introduced myself there first. I had been visiting here regularly for a while, and decided that I really needed to join up. There are so many fascinating people and topics here!

While I spent most of my life in the California Bay Area, I recently moved to Colorful Colorado. I have pretty varied interests, including: drawing, painting, card making, gardening, sewing, embroidery, photography, antiques, reading, history, classic movies and genealogy. I've always admired the classic styles of clothing from the 1940s and 1950s and have slowly begun adopting aspects of the style into what I wear.

I'm thrilled to become a part of a community of ladies and gentlemen with similar interests.
I look forward to getting to know you!

Joie

Hi Ya'll

I just found this place last week and it took me a while to get registered and back over here. This is such a great site. Ya'll seem to really enjoy it here. Hopefully I can make it back from time to time.
My name's Rita and YES I was named for Rita Hayworth cause I was born while she was still HOT............and my Daddy thought she was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I also had read hair......still do but it's courtesy of Loreal.

The hubby and I are celebrating our 35th anniversary this summer and we have an eBay business as well as a seperate website. We sell only vintage items and specialize in patterns, postcards, photographs and magazine advertisements. We also sell the occasional article of clothing when they can be found here in our little North Texas town. We're strickly a Mom & Pop enterprise and like it that way.

I was directed to this lounge by a member of another group I'm in when I was asking about the style of monograms on some Men's hankies I have. They graciously sent me over here. But it took me so long to get here that the the hankies are already listed and have bids so I really don't need advice in that particular direction....although I would still like to know and may ask in whatever appropriate place that might be. LOL
Thanks for having me and I hope I can be a contribution.

Oh yeah..........the name might seem weird but it's our ID on eBay and I've just stuck to it everywhere cause it's easier than trying to remember several different ID's.

But you can just call me Rita.
