I introduced myself in the Powder Room, but I figured I might as well introduce myself here as well! I've been fascinated by the films and stars of the '20s through the '60s for as long as I can remember. I started shopping at thrift stores when I was in junior high -- I wish I could say it was because of a love for vintage fashion, but at that point, I just didn't want to step foot in a mall! As I got older, I learned more and more about vintage styles and started buying actual vintage clothes, which I wear on a regular basis. I guess I'm a bit different than most of the people here in that my favorite era is the mid-to-late '50s through the early '60s (that said, my favorite era for films is the early '30s!). In addition to my collection of vintage clothing and accessories, I also collect mid-century furnishings and decor, vintage magazines and '50s and early '60s 45 RPM records. I've rambled enough, so I'll stop myself now and just say that it's nice to meet y'all!

that was always my problem when i lived there, there were people who were into vintage clothing as fad, but not into it seriously and the women I did know who were seriously into it were like 10 years my senior. They still made great roll models though.

Okay.... Time After Time Vintage Thrift on Franklin St. in Chapel Hill. I LOVE this place. I literally got half of my clothing there and was in there so much I knew everyone. They have a great selection of stuff, they are priced like a thrift store and the owners actually know what they've got. If you're looking for specific stuff, they can some times find it for you. The lady in the duo has a cook book in print and they also own Deadly Night Shades, which does fiberglass lampshades.

Pam's Vintage Boutique, on Hillsoborugh St. in Raleigh, it's right near the fairgrounds as you head out of town on hwy 54. I can't remember what the cross street is. It's on the right hand side if you're headed toward 54. She had more stuff crammed in that store... Yikes.. i loved her too, but she could get expensive.

Beggars and Choosers in Pittsboro, it's on the town square on the corner, you can't miss it. It's three floors of vintage everything, plus a few out buildings of furniture. Clothing is on the top floor.

There's another place on Hillsborough St in Raleigh, it's upstairs... Um, I think it's across from Blue Flame Tattoo. I haven't been the in ages and can't remember the name of the place. She had great stuff.

Stumbled onto this forum via a Google search for 40's hairstyles!
Been into Swing/Big Band music for....oohhh....about dare I say it...29 years!! Back when my brothers were Teddy Boys and I was a "Ted In Training" along with the Punk albums I'd smuggle home was a few Glenn Miller eps and a Tommy Dorsey 7".
I loved the BIG sound!!
Add to it my continuing interest in WWII, and here I am.
Along with my other hobbies: Tikis, vintage Robots, tattoos, Hot Rods, Rockabilly, Las Vegas ephemera, Universal Horror movies, Film Noir and swanky suits, I feel RIGHT at home here!!
And it's very nice to meet so many friendly people!

Daisy, must you call me out... I have been a member of the forum for almost two years now and this will be my 35th post. Does that qualify me as a lurker lol ?

A brief background: A New Englander through and through. Have always been fascinated by well dressed men. In my childhood, I was a fan of Jimmy Stewart, Fred Astaire and Cary Grant. Don't think that I would really change who I look up to for style, but now I add Bing Crosby and Bogart to the list. I must say that I feel Crosby is under appreciated; he had a certain sense of casualness (use of odd jackets and slacks) that I really like.

On the female front, there is nothing more beautiful than a women who can put an outfit together. And of course it is even better if she is dressed like a lady in true vintage style.

As for dress, I don't necessarily dress vintage. I do like to dress with an air of vintage though. You can do that with modern clothes, it is all in how you put them together.

Joined the Coast Guard awhile back and have "floated" to North Carolina, Seattle and currently San Diego. katiepickle, I'd love to meet up with a fellow vintage fan from the area. Drop me a line if you're interested.

Managed to hit two Queen Mary events and had a blast at both. Made some great friends there. I'm hoping to come back to this world following the holidays.

Maybe I can make it to 100 posts before the next Queen Mary... that would be a real accomplishment.

If I've put this in the wrong area, please forgive me. I felt it was time to step out of the corner and introduce myself.

I've been lurking here for some time now and I finally decided to say hello. First off, let me say that you ladies are all beautiful. You all take my breath away. You inspire me to be a better turned out woman. Thank you.

I'm not vintage by any stretch of the imagination but I'm headed there. I've always loved the style and grace of the 40's woman. Never a hair out of place, perfect makeup and beautiful clothes, even through the lean times of the war years. My mom says I learn towards the Esther Williams kind of girl. Out spoken to the nth degree. I like to think of myself as more of the Eve Arden/Rosalind Russell type of wise cracking big shouldered broad (said with much respect). I'm a motorcyclist in training and the vintage bikes have so much more style. I'll keep y'all posted on any vintage motorcyling wear I find.

I come here every day to evesdrop on your conversations and to learn anything I can. Ponds cold cream and Coty Airspun powder now grace my 1930's dressing table. Cardigans and wool skirts are showing up in my closet and Pendleton knows me by name. You ladies , without knowing it, are making womanhood a grand and glorious thing again. Dressing well is not for special occasions anymore. Nice makeup and a great hairstyle is an everyday thing to be enjoyed.

So, thanks for everythings girls.

Hello Everyone!

I’m from the south of England, Hampshire to be exact, and am a good old fashioned housewife. I live in a small village where wearing vintage all of the time is a bit impractical so I have a wardrobe of beautiful clothing with nowhere really, to wear it all! Although that doesn’t really stop me as there are always days out and events that mean I have every opportunity to dress up.

I grew up with my grandparents so old black and white films were pretty much the norm and I soon got used to the constant Shirley Temple remarks because of my fair curly hair as a child. My first film star crushes were Errol Flynn and Humphrey Bogart which really singled me out from other girls in my school who adored Tom Cruise. It was rather obvious that I wasn’t cut out to conform and people have always remarked on how timeless I looked, so once I started wearing the vintage clothing, everything fell into place.

I started off in the 1960’s, listening to nothing but sixties music and going to mod clubs in London. Soon bored, I started slipping backward and before I knew what was happening I found myself loitering quite happily in the 1940’s. I often cook from WWII rationed recipes, though I think my husband thought I had gone a bit far when I served up a steamed chocolate pudding complete with mock cream!

Being as tall as I am, I find locating vintage clothing to fit my height rather difficult so I have tried my hand at dress-making. So far I have made a few dresses, the last two being forties style and I have also tried my hand at making a hat and gloves which I still curse, such a hard time they gave me!

I am a bit of an architecture tart and love to photograph beautiful buildings, particularly art deco wonders and gothic cathedrals.

And for now, that would be about all I can think to say!

I've been lurking for month or two before I signed up earlier this month, I've already posted a little in the Hats section. I don't really remember how I found the lounge, something to do with searching for fedoras.
I particularly like the 20's and 30's that started by watching King Kong a long time ago, I think when I was 4 or 5. Mostly I like fedoras and am starting to grow a collection. I like to dress vintage, but don't much due to being a college student (geology major) and working in a machine shop.
That's about it... I'm kinda the quiet type.

my name is nika and from tucson, arizona. i'm mostly into
fashions from the 1920s/1930s as well as the 1940s,
but i'm especially obsessed with everything depression-era.

i am pursuing an undergraduate degree in photography
and i suppose a lot of my work is inspired by historical
photography, as well as fashion photography of the 30s/40s,
especially work by madame yevonde and louise dahl wolfe.

i own a few day dresses from the 30s and a lot of 50s
garments, which i've found most readily available round
these parts. i also make an effort to marcel/wave my hair
everyday, so in terms of striving for a specific aesthetic of
an era, i'm a conglomerate !

I've already made a few posts but I've never formally introduced myself.

I currently live in London and I came across this site looking for a hat.

Ever since I was a child I've been fascinated with the 30-50s fashions, styles and culture. Whilst everyone at school was trying to copy Michael J Fox I was trying to style my hair like Dick Powell. Even then I wanted to wear a fedora and I've decided that for 2007 I'm going to become a hat wearer.

My current job as a Fraud Investigator is a bit of a dream I guess, especially when you consider my interest in vintage style! Coming to work dressed as Philip Marlowe might turn a few heads!!

Hello! My name is Heidi McGraw. I have to admit I’ve been “lurking” for almost a year now, and am quite a fan of this site! The Powder Room has proved to be a GREAT resource for me! I’ve learned so many useful tips that I just can’t say “Thank you” enough to the ladies there! I am already familiar with some members here from places like MySpace and was encouraged to join by ~landgirl~, who assured me everyone here is very warm and friendly!
As long as I can remember, I’ve preferred “old things”. Even in high school my Papa and I would dig through the local thrift stores looking for vintage clothing. That was back in the days when you could still hit pay dirt at your local Goodwill! I really got into the rockabilly scene in college and that has since evolved into a passion for vintage living in general! My long time Gentleman friend and I spend our free time hunting down bargains on vintage goodies here in the Mid-West on anything and everything from clothes, to cars, to house wares for that dream house we’re working toward!

Hello everyone! I only just saw this thread

I've already introduced myself in the other thread in the Observation Deck, but regardless, here I go again!

I live in the south of England and am married to a lovely man who, day job aside, is the singer and guitarist in a sixties garage punk band. He loves all things vintage too, but doesn't slip back as far as I tend too! I pootle about in the forties and fifties, long ago having become bored of the sixties (I was truly obsessive, living, eating and breathing the era. My husband, in response to my constant playing of sixties music, used to call our house my sixties pop boutique, hehe!)
I can't dress vintage all of the time, it's rather impractical seeing as I live in a very rural area and face muddy lanes for the most part when I go out of the front door! But I do have a wardrobe of original vintage/vintage repro's/handmade items at my disposal.

I love to cook WWII rationed recipes and go through spates of cooking nothing but. here was a raised eyebrow when I served up a steamed chocolate pudding with mock cream, but I promised never to make mock cream ever again!

I go to a lot of forties events and have managed to convince my husband that he should join in and he now comes along in full Royal Navy regalia which is fabulous!

I think I've rambled loong enough, do I shall stop!

Oh all right. I am 67, a young 67 though. Much of my life has been taken up with radio collecting to the point where I have 400 early radios and speakers. Except for 28 Atwater Kent early thirties cathedral sets most are 1922-4 battery sets. My father liked radios and DXing in the twenties and he could recall about every station he ever got from WDAF (Coon Sanders Nighthawks) to Ralph Williams Rainbo Orchestra on the WEBH at the Edgewater Beach Hotel (I guess it was). I have collected about everything related to the subject including 1920's music on 78's to DX letters from early stations and thousands of 20's radio magazines. Most of it was luck and persistance.. I have been into DXing heavily even TV getting stations from Texas from western Mass. That is the only time I watch it. The first time my Mother in law visited us I was watching a blank screen waiting for something to come in from the midwest. She never looked at me the same way again. I have a 36 Ford Coupe, a 1934 Studebaker, and a wife. The best years of my life were spent in the Navy serving on the USS Leyte and the FDR, both carriers. My favorite radio show is Vic and Sade, I am a die hard (yes I have died several times) Red Sox fan. Other hobbies are 1920's movie theatre architecture and ocean liners. Favorite newer radio show is The Jazz Decades with Ray Smith. Favorite writer? You guessed it - Elizabeth MacLeod.
