The oils in it will keep it that way. When it's cold it'll be stiff. When it's warm it'll relax. It was below freezing in Chicago today and I wore mine for a minute and quickly switched to my Vanson. Was a tin man in CXL.

So the oils in Clayton stay in the skin longer than other brands? Just trying to understand why MRB's Clayton leather jacket is still stiff after a year.

I've only handled a sample of that hide but it has similar oil stuffed properties that CXL has. So long as the jacket retains those oils and waxes it will likewise retain some of that stiffness. It's a benefit imho not a detriment.

Mine is not 'stand on its own stiff' but it is no slouch. A year, you say? Haha ok I will keep that in mind. It's like wearing a coat of licorice--impossibly black with a dull shine.

But MRB, how could such thin horsehide stay stiff for a full year of steady use? It seems odd.

I don't ride so my coat is just on for the commute to work and back. And when it's under 40 degrees, the wool comes out. So it doesn't see much hard work to put it mildly.

Or perhaps an action back. FL member Monitor had mentioned once that he found an action back to allow more freedom of movement.

Perhaps there's a way of softening the shoulder area by scrunching it up in a certain way while not wearing it. I roll my arms around sometimes hahahaha.

My next jacket will have that mod.
