Gangster means cool but really, really cool. Like, "that car is gangster".

Fisher is a fisherman style hat. One of those kind that LL Cool J used to wear. because of the whole Neo Soul movement, (R&B singers who actually sing and whose musicians actually play instruments), a lot of younger Black guys are getting into the hat thing. To this day at least in my neck of the woods, an older Black man is not dressed properly unless he has a great hat, same goes for the ladies, particularly the church going ones.

Riccardo's story makes me imagine . . .

a standard FL member's reply to the complimenting lady might go something like, "Don't suppose you still got your father's hats by any chance, do ya?"lol

I would guess it is not a Fisher hat but a Fischer hat.

The toque seems to be popular right now. In Canada it seems to be skaters and black people who wear them outside of winter. The one with a brim just reminds me of Radar for MASH but whatever floats your boat. But it could be a bucket hat of some sort.

Now that is one ugly damn hat. :eusa_doh:

Rosie...thanks for the insight...as I was reading it the faces of dozens of artists popped into my head with that style of hat. I wasn't making the connection...lol. Now that I am typing this it reminds me, the Latino rap/hip hop crowd is VERY into fedora style hats....and fisher ones as well. Usually a bit larger than necessary and worn over a bandana. Cool look actually.

No problem. On the days when I'm not dressed in vintage, I usually fall into that category, sort of like this : http://www.soul-stew.de/soul/nusoul/jaguar.jpg

I've heard the term "gangster" used before to denote something cool, or old school. "That's gangster!" It's something I've become accustomed to, so I get it. If he meant one of those fly fishing hats, that's weird. But maybe he DID mean "Fischer". I've also heard the term "brim", both from my dad ([huh]) and random people on the street.

Hi James

That plush finish isn't a bad hat at all. If that is what they mean by a fischer then I have a few of those. :D

Regards,

J

A fisher is something more like this:

kangol-pinstripe-trilby-main.jpg

sometimes with a wider brim, sometimes with a rounder crown. I'm not exactly sure why it's called a fisher, [huh] I'll have to ask my brother or cousins. A fisherman's hat would be called a fishing hat, at least that's what I've always heard it called. My sister bought my dad one when he retired and he said "I won't be caught in that there thing." and, he's never worn it.
