New hat term from a “Hat Moment” at Sam’s Club

Hi all…on my way to work today I had to stop at Sam’s for some allergy pills (tough pollen season this year) and I had on an early 60’s Bailey Panama coarse weave. As I was checking out the friendly clerk, an African American gentleman in his mid to late 20’s, complemented me on my hat. I will give you the conversation verbatim…(please understand that I am not using any exaggerations here….just the direct conversation)

Clerk: Das a nice brim you got there.

Me: (2 second pause to realize that the term “Brim” meant my hat) Thanks, it’s a Panama from the early 60’s.

Clerk: Sweet lid.

Me: I like it a lot too.

Clerk: Yeah I got me a sweet gansta fisher.

Me: Cool. Do you like it?

Clerk: Ohhhh yeah. Its jus like stylin on the golf course.

Me: Well…enjoy it.

Clerk: You know it. Have a good one.

Me: Thanks, you too.

Now a couple things about this. First, its very nice to see the hat culture and the appreciation of good hats shifting to young urban people and second, I may be out of the loop but I have never heard of a hat referred to as a “Brim”. So…feel free to spread the knowledge.

"Brim" is a common word for a hat among the modern, urban community. At least it is here in the Midwest. I get that compliment a lot, especially with my diamond-crown stingy lid. It's casual but cool.

As for a "gangsta fisher", perhaps he had something like this in mind?

It's very Run-DMC. I don't know that it would be comfortable to wear while playing golf. . .

I would guess it is not a Fisher hat but a Fischer hat.

The toque seems to be popular right now. In Canada it seems to be skaters and black people who wear them outside of winter. The one with a brim just reminds me of Radar for MASH but whatever floats your boat. But it could be a bucket hat of some sort.

Ewwww! I hope he didn't mean that hat. I think my brother-in-law has one like it except less fuzzy. Talk about making fun of hats.....:p :D

Jamespowers now now remember different strokes for different folks. Besides I could be wrong. He did recognize and appreciate a vintage panama after all.

Hi to all,
It happens that someone tell us something about our hats.
Today I've received the best compliments for me, and for my hats.
A woman,a customer of mine, said me "you have a very beautiful hat, you remember me my father, he had five like these...".
She was wrong, her father didn't got any Panama, he got other kind of hat, I think.
But I was proud to remember her something goog.

Riccardo.

"Gangsta" was probably used as an adjective, one that might be synonomous with "cool". Don't know about the "fisher" part-maybe he has a cool fishing hat, or at least a hat he associates with fishing. Brim is a fairly common term for hats, I believe.

Brim

Brim is a common term for a hat with a true brim, such as a Fedora or a Panama. Many people think a hat is the , er, ball cap, which you wear at the BALLPARK or FISHING....NOT with a SUIT like I have seen some poor slob do:rage: :rage:

A brim hat is a generic term just for a wide brim hat.

Hats Off To Hats

I'm with anybody who wears anything but a baseball cap. Fischer looks Rasta, is it? More fedora spotting locally around LA. Whole crew at the Hollywood post office wanted to know about the fedora I was wearing.
Maybe it's classier ( or more noire) than an issued pith helmet which is still classier than a ball cap.

What a great story this is, Riccardo! That kind of thing makes my day when it happens.
