New G-1 Winter / Fall Project

Evening Gentlemen,

Having not had much luck finding an original G-1 in a 48 that fits me in the shoulders I'm going to have my Star Sportwear '72 used as the basis / pattern (nothing being pulled apart) for a repro (at least 21" shoulders).

I've gathered mouton for the collar, lining, buttons, knits & NOS zipper & will hopefully have the jacket made in goat in the next few weeks by one of the makers known to TFL.

I will post pictures of the finished jacket on here with details once it's been made :)

What are your required shoulder measurements? I have a size 48 here I picked up to make a pattern from & might be able to help with any measurements if needed.

Thanks Steve S, the service issue size 48 G-1s I've come across have been around 20" in the shoulders seam to seam which comes up a bit too snug for me. My '72 Star Sportswear 48 is perfect measurement wise in every other respect. I really need about 21" / 22", same problem with most original MA-1's too & L-2B's etc.

This should be very interesting -- I'm really looking forward to photos, etc. Having heard about your shoulder issue several times in the past, I think it's fair to say we're all wishing success for this project!

Wow, good luck! G-1's are a bear to make. John Chapman says they take MUCH longer than an A-2 to build with MANY pitfalls/traps along the way!

Yes, depending on the manufacturer being copied, the back is 5-7 seperate pieces vs 1 on the A-2. Then there is the inside pocket, underarm gussets etc. Not sure if I would have ever figured out the AN-J-3 I make without having the original apart for restoration & building the first model alongside as I reassembled it.

This one I have is 21" across the shoulders.

Oh, I can appreciate the excitement you must be feeling, BN - hunting and gathering the quality parts and materials you want for the preparation.
And now it's over to the maker …
I'm looking forward to seeing how your project works out - and fingers crossed for the fit you're after and I hope to hear you're chuffed to bits with the G-1.

I'm going to get a calico 'mock up' made first & tried for fit & adjustments. Fingers crossed!!!

And let's not forget the two elastic bands inside the back to keep the bi-swing back vents together when at rest!

Spent an hour yesterday getting measured up for the G-1 & looking at the tweaks needed to hit my numbers. Chose the hide too which was close to the original Sportwear goat (from Italian tannery). Get to try on a calico 'mock up' before it's committed to leather :) Project should be completed by end of Feb 2016. Bi-swing 'elastic bands' are being added too Doc :)

G-1 Project continues:

Due to try on calico mock-up in a couple of weeks & then after final adjustments the jacket will be made.

Had a re-think on knits & have just purchased some 'Brick Red' ones from MASH to 'liven' the jacket up and contrast well with the rusty/orange mouton collar :) A bit darker red than they appear in photo.

Your thoughts please Gentlemen:

Jacket maker won't punch USN into windflap, should I:
  • Leave it plain
  • Get a leather worker I know to punch it (using original G-1 as guide for perforation position)
  • Painted USN stencil to back of collar (I know a hand sign writer who'd do that well).
  • Both USN on flap and collar paint (jacket isn't supposed to be an accurate representation).

If you go with scalloped pocket flaps, then I'd add a stencil behind the collar. If you opt for the more modern straight-cut pocket flaps then I'd go plain windflap.
