I loved this one. Had it not been done well, it could have been terrible. But they got it just right. The actors handled the dialogue well (as with shakespeare, if you don't really have a command of the language it flops) the characters were just believeable enough as both film noir and high school characters. Enough like reality to go along with anyway.
The way they made the characters fit the film noir archetypes, but also high school archetypes was artful, and the way they kept the whole feel detached and deadpan really worked.
And they had a great feel for just enough humor. It was not a comedy, but they knew it would be funny watching the wise cracking protagonist talk to the principal as if he were a private detective talking to the chief of police. The parallels were hilarious at times, but not enough to make it a comedy. You had to suspend your reality a little, but well worth it.
