Hello all, I am new to the Fedora Lounge as a user but have been lurking for quite a while. I have really enjoyed learning about the “Golden Era”. I have always felt a strong attraction towards vintage clothes, cars, movies, furniture etc. and it has been a real revelation to pour through the threads. The amount of combined knowledge on all things vintage here is phenomenal and has really been a great resource for me as I try to find my own personal vintage style. Thanks to all the Fedora Lounge Posters. :eusa_clap

I am hoping to put the knowledge of the Fedora Lounge to use in regards to a pair of shoes I picked up at a thrift store here locally. I have been able to find Alden’s, Church’s, Allen Edmonds, and Johnston and Murphys semi regularly (I knew to look for these because of the rate your favorite shoes thread). However, I recently came across a pair of John Lobb’s and a couple pair of Grenson’s. I looked them up on the big auction site everyone uses and they were going for a pretty high price. Where do you place these two manufactures in relation to other manufactures?

John Lobb would rank above everything else you've found (I assume it's John Lobb Paris, rather than bespoke John Lobb St. James). Grenson makes shoes at different quality/price points. Their nicest line is the Masterpiece, and is a very, very nice shoe. It will rank with Crockett & Jones Handgrade, just below Edward Green and John Lobb. Grenson makes the shoes that Paul Stuart sells for $700.

You've done amazingly well thrifting for shoes. I seldom come across quality shoes in good condition thrifting, and never Lobbs or Church's.

Of the one's you listed you could rank them:

Lobb
Grenson Masterpiece
Alden Church's
Allen Edmonds

Johnston & Murphy

You better be careful and not reveal your secret or alternatively become everybody's 'new best friend' on the Lounge!:D

John Lobb

Even on Ebay, John Lobb shoes are generally not inexpensive. However, there is a size 8.5 M Brown Oxford (used) on there currently for $69.99.

John lobbs are John Lobb Paris

The inside of the shoes say John Lobb Paris and the side of the interior says: 9008 912E
136x William

I assume that the name of the shoe style is William, and perhaps one of those numbers is a size and the other a last used to produce the shoe?

Do you think the 912E means 12E British size?

I'm kinda lost on this? What do you all think?

William--are they captoe double-monks? 12E very well could be the size, as 'E' is the standard width designation in English shoes. That would translate roughly into 12.5D in US sizing. Let's see some pics!

They are cap toe double-monks. I will attempt to upload the pics here. I suspect your right about the size as they are quite a bit larger than I can wear. I haven’t cleaned or polished them so they are a little rough but overall in good shape.

Shoe trees, polish and a good listing, and you can do very well with those on ebay. They look to be in very good shape.

This would be a great question for some of the...

OG Loungers like Wild Root and M. Chevalier. Two men also of impeccable taste. I recently have been on the hunt for Church's shoes as alot of my colleagues, friends and acquaintances speak of them highly. Unfortunately, they closed their San Francisco store, so alas I'm going to have to go to the New York stores when I'm in the Big Apple again. At the top of my list would definitely be Allen Edmonds, and even though I've told Magneto that they are just bloody expensive but alas you get what you pay for. I haven't met ONE person that hasn't been in love with their shoes even though they were older than sin.

FG.
