New Custom Belted-back Jacket

Hello Everyone,

I recently decided to have a jacket made in a classic 30's English style based somewhat on "Hastings'" jacket from The Poirot Mysteries.

This was, more of less, what I was going for:





And this is what I came up with. Houndstooth being scarce this time of year (and heavy for summer wear), I decided on a Glen Plaid.



Now, I also miscalculated the buttons on the pockets, thinking they were an embellishment and not button-through. Mine are decorative. I could, of course, have my tailor sew the button holes, but I may just leave them for a cleaner line. I'm still deciding on that one.





And, of course, the famous Deckard Arm-hole test. The results? Not bad. Not quite like a vintage jacket, but not bad at all.



I also added the expandable back pleat because I like a tailored fit, but I also want the freedom of movement. I based this back from Matt's Hemrajani Suit.

I am very pleased with this jacket and wanted to share it with you all. I'm curious as to what you think?

I really like that fabric. Very nice. I don't think I could resist getting actual buttonholes sewn in.

They did a good job, especially on the back. BTW, you gotta cut the buttonholes.

The back detail reminds me of a jacket we saw at Bobby's.

Great jacket. I think it is okay with no buttonholes. if you put them in then you have to unbutton and buton them to use the pocket. You can't leave them unbuttoned. i hate extra work like buttoning and unbuttoning pockets.

I gotta say though, while they probably cost a little bit, since the fabric is readily available, why not get pants to match? Then you have a sport coat and a suit for not much more.

I swear, if I could find fabric to match two jackets I own, I would do it in a second.

Sure. I forget to say. It was $300 delivered.

You make a very good point about the buttonholes. I am still mulling it over, but I like the way it looks now, so why mess with it?

If that's the case, then don't. Custom is all about how you want it to be.

I think its perfect! My wife and I are big fans of Poirot and I drive her nuts by pausing the show to see the details of Hastings suits and sportcoats. You've brought that jacket to life and you wear it well. Congratulations on a good purchase.

I have a jacket very like the one Hastings wears that I bought in a clearance sale at UK High Street chain store Next about ten years ago. Similar cut, similar features, similar houndstooth. I have often thought that the property department may have bought the one in the Poirot series from Next (which, by the way, is much despised in the UK).

Never quite got that, mysaelf - I've always had good experiences with Next (a lot of my shirts are from there) - the one thing I loathe about them is that they change their collections so often, they might have a season where I like a lot, then two where there's nothing I would wear. Good for basics, though - i have one very nice white, French-cuffed sahirt from Next that is a few years old now and still comes up fantastically in the wash.

Sharp jacket, BTW...
