New collar and cuffs.

I don't know if it changed with time, but in the 19th century they would do a quick whip stitch just inside the garment to hold them in and snip them off before laundering. You could use snaps if you want it to be more temporary.

I'd also say they're supposed to be sewn on. Since they didn't wash the garments so often (or not at all), it was okay to remove the trimming before each wash and sew back on afterwards. Maybe you can sew on small patent fasteners; but that's probably what ColeV48 means.

Beautiful set! I love lace collars and cuffs like that, they can make a dull frock instantly exquisite. I like to sew little snaps or hook-and-eyes in all mine to make them interchangeable .

This is tremendous! I am going to add the snaps to these. And sew the snap backs to my choosen piece of clothing. Then remove the snap backs from my clothing (not the collars or cuff). So, I will not loose the snaps and add them to my clothes when needed.

I have a collar like this and I never know where to put it! I can't seem to find a dress with the right kind of neckline... do you know what you're going to sew it onto yet? I'd be really interested to see a picture, before and after!

Ladies,

I just finished making an adorable faux cheetah collar (with satin lining!). Trouble is, whilst I can fasten the collar itself, I can't think of a way to *temporarily* secure it to my sweaters, etc, without damaging the fabric and the collar. Any ideas? Hope that makes sense. Some sort of clip would be best- I need something that'll hold it tightly to the fabric but that will let me remove the collar, as I'd like it to be interchangeable. Having the collar be washable is not a concern, so feel free to suggest anything that you think might work!

I realise a safety pin is the easiest option but I'd rather not make holes in the collar and sweater, and I'd be slightly nervous about having a sharp pin on something quite tightly around my neck!

Ok, this is totally outside the realm of sewing, but would alligator clips work? You could sew them onto the collar and then clip them to the sweater, etc. They have "teeth" but they are not sharp and will grip. They come in small sizes too- they actually remind me a lot of sweater clips.

That is probably the weirdest suggestion you'll get.

I usually pin mine on (because I'm lazy and I have no ability to plan ahead and actually put eyes and hooks on clothes). Collars can sometimes be fastened just with a brooch, depending in the cut. Usually I use small safety pins, but I sometimes use ordinary pins too - I have no fear of sharp objects.

I just ironed a whole bunch yesterday and actually thought about snapping some pictures of them and sharing. How about a "share your collars and cuffs" thread?

I was going to buy some small plain metal alligator clips, but eBay turned up an unexpectedly brilliant solution: baby hair clips! They're basically a small alligator clip covered in nice grosgrain ribbon, in a colour to match the lining of my collar. Much nicer than having a shiny metal clip on the back of my satin-lined faux-fur collar So excited at the prospect of being able to actually wear the collar now- especially as I just finished making a great black dress that it will look rather fetching with!
