facebook is alright, as long as you don't connect them to your e-mail or your mobile, and don't make/ accept "friend" with total strangers all over the world. it is the easiest way to say "merry X-mas everyone" or showing off occasional photo about things you've bought or places you've been without being seen as a show off, because everybody else doing the same.

I use it to follow jacket and boot makers. They always advertise new models and sales etc via facebook.

The trick on fb is to portray yourself as a madman from the start. Then you can get away with posting away nonsensical things into oblivion. People will think "this guy is strange" vs "this guy just had a mental breakdown."
