New band

Received a Brown band for my PB Montecristi Fino Havana from Robert on Saturday. I took the time to change the band from the black that it came with to the brown. Wore it to work today and had co-workers ask if it was a new hat. I like the look of the brown band.

Oh yeah . . . I really like the brown, I think I might even like it better than the black (which we're all used to seeing on Panamas). In fact, the more I look at it, the more I like it!

Wrapping up some chemo treatments in the next couple of months and as a celebration, the family and I are heading to Florida for a week.....Will be early October.

I think I have to have a Panama myself for Florida.....Still OK to wear one there in October, or is that taboo?

You practically need to wear a Panama down here year round, no taboo about it ...
If you're seriously asking, though, the heat and humidity of the afternoon will require something light, but evenings will be cooler by October. So bring a dress hat and a Panama :fedora:

Oh, and, on topic, the brown ribbon looks great. I recently tried a thin brown ribbon on a Panama and did not like it, but if I go up a size maybe I can get mine looking that sharp!

I think this brown ribbon switch is a great illustration of alternatives to the standard black working well. I wonder...what is the origin of black being the standard? Is it really the historical standard?

I've read here that the black band was adopted by the Brits (those in the warmer reaches of the empire) in mourning for the death of Queen Victoria. Seems that the Panama straw hat's wide adoption kind of coincided with the old gal's demise.
That's what I recall others saying, anyway, and they presumably know of what they speak.

I just got a panama from Ecuador that came with a brown band. It says monticristi on the balsa box, but it's a cheapie I think...$20 I think....
