New Aero Californian

Onestar - Yes, I did as Lenny did and ordered all pockets corduroy lined. It is a great feature and they feel great - a must for all my jackets from now on. The best thing is, Aero didn't charge any extra - what's not to like :)

OneEyeman - Hi Lenny, this corduroy feels so warm I can't keep my hands out of them :) Hope you're enjoying you new Highwayman.

deluxestyling - I have the same inner pockets on my Highwayman (one zip and one stud). I don't tend to use them much, because bulky items can make the front of the jacket bulge, but I wouldn't be without them all the same. They are great for thin things like cards and paper and the zip pocket is ideal for keeping a passport secure.

JanSolo - Many thanks for the tip off about the pocket lining and the leather strip around the inner hem. My Highwayman lining dropped a bit, after a while, until it started to hang below the back of the jacket - I had to get the wife to sew a horizontal pleat in the lining to lift it. This leather strip solves that and should prevent wear along that bottom edge - another must have feature for me now. I know you have quite a collection of jackets now, could I ask which is your favorite hide to date?

Mr. Peacoat - I have indeed learned so much from our discussions on peacoats and I thank you, my new friend, for taking the time to answer my many questions. I'm glad you like the modified Californian - the corduroy does look a like black in the photo but is is actually a very dark chocolate brown and really goes well the Russet hide. My main problem now is, do I wear my peacoat or an Aero? My passion for both is now equal but the peacoat is winning whilst the weather is still cold enough to wear it :)

Coop, I normally wear my Highwayman, or other leather jacket, when the temps are above freezing and there is precipitation in the air. I save the peacoats for those days that are cold and dry. Although the peacoat does well in a wet environment, I need to bifurcate use so I can exercise the leather jackets as well.

Glad you get a chance to wear both types.

Mr. Peacoat.

Very nice! I have one on order too in russet aniline horsehide. Whats the advantage of the leather band on the bottom? Is it for durability? I may have to ask John to put one on mine.

The main advantage is to protect the bottom edge of the lining which seems to get a lot of wear. Vintage leather jackets owners could probably confirm, but i have seen a few photos of really old jackets where the bottom edge of the lining was worn through completely. For me, it was to also prevent the lining from sagging down and showing below the bottom of the jacket, which did happen to my Highwayman after a time.

Cheers

That's a beauty and great fit too! I chose the corduroy pocket lining for my cheyenne as well and love it! Wish I would have done that on my other two Aero's as well.

Many thanks. I'm finding the Californian a great addition - it's such a smart style, I wear it out in the evening and it doesn't look out of place at all.

I agree with you on the corduroy pockets, I will never order another another jacket without them - glad you are enjoying your Cheyenne.

Cheers

Beautiful jacket and color... looks great on you too. :)

Hopefully in another 12 weeks I'll have the privilege of being a fellow Aero leather owner... the wait will definitely be worth it I'm sure. :)

Many thanks for the positive comments gentlemen. I am enjoying wearing this jacket and it was extremely comfortable straight out of the box. The most noticeable thing about this medium weight jerky hide is how quickly it starts to show it's grain compared to the heavy front quarter.

You got the cut and fittings just right on this. I'm interested to know about the hide. The other jerky hides shown on this forum have had that slightly rough look to them. Is this treated differently?

I'm not sure if this russet jerky hide is any different to that already seen - if you have any links to other jackets I would be very interested to compare the look of it.

When I was considering this order, I asked Amanda to send me some suitable medium weight samples. I received smooth seal horse, smooth russet horse, seal jerky horse and russet jerky horse. The two jerky hides definitely have more texture in the surface finish than the smooth but they are still soft to the touch. I afraid I don't have any info on the treatment process of this particular jerky but I wasn't told it was anything special so have to assume it has been through their standard process. Comparing the four medium weight hides to my heavy front quarter horse Highwayman, they do have a very even, almost sprayed on finish - would that be how the color goes on?

Cheers

I think maybe I'm confusing this with oil-pull. :eusa_doh:

The hides are sprayed.

Still a great jacket.

Wow! that's a great jacket, I love everything about it except that it's not mine:) I plan on moving south in the not to distant future and that would be a great jacket to have. Thanks for the photos.

Griemersma - great picture! I wasn't sure about the russet color of my jacket when I first got it but I love it now. The jacket in the photo is a lot more fitted but looks very good with the shirt and tie - love the old car too. This photo would go well in the thread about what to wear with a leather jacket. Thanks for posting.

Pushrod - If you plan on moving south, I think this medium weight hide would do very nicely.

Cooperson, if you don't mind my asking, how tall are you? I also take a 38 and am thinking of lengthening an Aero - a halfbelt, but I don't want the 'long halfbelt' - but am not sure by how much. I am 180cm.

Thanks in advance,

Sir Jacket

Kyboots - Cheers John. It's basically a standard Californian pattern but lengthened by 2 inches. It's a good compromise between the short Highwayman and long Half belt styles.

Sir Jacket - I am 5' 11"
