Negative comments about your jackets from others

Well, I guess not many of you are watching the infamous Game of Thrones anyway.....

I have a slightly different perspective, there are two very important women (my mum and my current partner....) in my life, both of them somehow managed to control my multiple addictions towards certain hobbies, including jackets. My numerous ex's, on the other hand, either did not really care about my purchases or even encouraged me to a certain extend, one in particular, was quite into fashions and was willing to spend big (for us both). My partner is very sensible right now, but since she is so good in saving up, that makes me feel a bit guilty to keep on spending on jackets that I do not really need. I still buy maybe a jacket a year but that's it, and they are usually mint 2nd hand jackets or nylon originals. Maybe we should consider ourselves..... lucky?

I think you've got it right about the mutual respect. You don't at all have to have the same interests: my wife is heavily into Joseph Campbell, Jung, Suzuki, etc, and... I'm not. She's into all of that because she's a good person and has a kind heart, which is good enough for me.
As for actresses, avoid them at all costs. I went out with a girl in NY a few times who was on a soap opera. Let's call her Jane Jones. She always referred to herself in the third person:e.g. "What do you get when you get a Jane Jones? I'll tell you." And so she did. And did. And did. It was like dating Julius Caesar. One night in a pub I tried to get her off it, but after three tries I gave up and escaped out a side door. As for the guy trashing the hotel room, well, as Lou Reed said,"Drunk and disorderly I ain't no Cupid/ two years ago today I was arrested on Christmas eve." (New Sensations) We all have had a few nights we'd just as soon forget about.

Oddly enough for someone who continually says that "animals have rights too!", Miss Linda likes my goatskin Wested Raiders jacket and is always reminding me not to leave it draped over a chair where my cats might mark it up with their claws. I say, "That'll just give it character!"

My personal mantra is: Dress for yourself, not for others. At the same time, don't lie to yourself either.. is that jacket a bit too short? Sleeves too long? Self regulation is the way to go

I have responded to a thread like this before. I just wear what I like and enjoy it. I love vintage but mostly on other people and in old photos. I can get some things to work. Pretty much everyone I know does not like my vintage anything: jackets (mostly A-2’s) and those "dorky" dark selvage denim jeans!!!! I mostly wear “regular" clothing and to be honest, most of it does look better on me. I am used to people not liking my jackets. I get compliments from family and friends when I am NOT wearing “vintage”. The only time I get compliments on vintage are on my patched/painted A-2's. its also gone the other way with those jackets. What I really dislike on so many folks who are into vintage, is this supposed "vintage fit" which for many means waaaay too small and form fitting. Looking at large numbers of vintage photos, there is no argument to support this super form fitting look in any way. Fits were all over the map back then. I am mentioning this fit thing as I think one's clothing fit has a lot to do with how the clothing is seen/perceived by others.

Give it 'character'! Oh no it won't, I had a leather tub chair which the cat had clawed the back of, little bits of leather sticking out everywhere. Luckily The chair sat in a corner so the damage could not be seen. The cat was called Big H after a bouncer I knew but thought of changing his name to Freddy(Kruger)

I really don't like dressing 'Vintage' every day, as you say just wear what you enjoy. Usually I will mix some vintage with some modern, it can work you know and look better in my opinion than a pure vintage look. I really don't want to go out looking like a 50 year old John Boy Walton though I wouldn't mind the office ladies sporting the Mad Men look.
I mainly wear vintage inspired clothing rather than the real thing. An Aero Teamster with a pair of RM Williams brushed cotton riding jeans in tan and a pair of brown pull on boots. An Eatsman A2 with a pair of modern 501s working on the car or taking rubbish to the dump. A nice A2 with clean jeans and pull on boots again for every day wear why not. And now I have bought myself one of those workwear jackets in canvas as my Mrs doesn't care for the military look, this is ok providing I don't get it all oily etc.
Maybe its me but wearing vintage everyday can go to far. 1950s bike jackets stinking of dogs n cats, maybe a little garage odour or with damage so an arm is almost hanging off etc maybe assumed to look cool on a pop(or should that be rock) star, but for everyday wear?

Greta cat went mad one day a couple of years ago and ripped the end out of the sofa when I was at work. No idea why - we think I must have spilled catnip essence on it! Needles to say, when the new one arrives in a few weeks' time, it will be fully coated in lemon scent and anything else to keep her at bay. Oddly she never went for the leather chair, but we decided in the end we didn't want a leather sofa, so...

I work in modern pieces in a classic cut solely due to money (if I could afford to have everything tailor-made to vintage cuts, I'd never wear 'modern' again). I agree with you, though, that there's nothing really vintage or particularly cool about stuf that's just completely worn out. I want to look like a guy who wore the clothes in 193x/194x/195x when they were new, not sokme tramp wearing stuff that's alling to bits! This is why I prefer good repro over original in most things.

I had an ex-girlfriend a bit like that. Sometimes I still miss her - but my aim is getting better.

You would be surprised, a lot of them do do it.

I also have an original Lewis Leathers jacket that is so bad I am taking all the good bits off and selling them singly for other jackets restoration. An avid collector said to me "I would be destroying a piece of history" I knew he wanted it to do exactly what I was doing so asked for an offer and he would not give me one so I just stuffed it back in the car.

Back in the early 1980s when the Hep Cat look took off here in the UK, it was either 100% genuine American or nobody would talk to you and girlfriends were really fussy about what the fella's wore which is why shops such as American Classics and Flip did so well. From around 1982 to the mid 80s about the only thing British you could get away with was an original Irvin. So me in my original A2, I was a bit of a nobody with my jacket and modern Chino's

Hey, lots of folks here go all out with vintage pretty regularly. Check the other threads. Another example is a place like denimbro which is filled with pictures of people spending incredible sums of money of stuff that frequently looks awful on them.......IMO.

There is footage of Paul walking into George Harrison's house with a leather jacket on. George quips, "Is that a vegetarian leather jacket?" LOL I think Paul showed him some sort of label inside of the jacket that certified it was all right.

My wife won't normally comment on my jackets as it usually leads to a contentious conversation over the cost of them. I have however received a number of compliments from strangers on the street or retail locations, especially the Aero 30's HB.

To my complete surprise, we ended up having a look through some jackets tonight together! I think she felt a little bit guilty about how she reacted to some of my other jackets - not that she knows about this thread...

Well, she's still not a massive fan of the A2, but she loved the Eastman Rough Wear B6 ("nice colour of leather and it looks old and beaten up in a good way") and various MA-1 style jackets. Big fan of the B-15C Mod it seems...(I don't have the heart to tell her it's just a B-15 with the collar removed!). ELMC Californian and Aero Highwayman both got big thumbs up too!

She wasn't keen on the prices though...
