Hello!
I was wondering if any of you have any ideas for some old movies for children.
I'm trying to educate & expose my children to some of the older movies and so far so good! We make a family thing out of it and and sit, watch and talk about afterwords.

So far, we've seen:
It's a Wonderful Life
Oliver Twist -1940s B&W original
Lassie -the original 1940s version
Call of the Wild -I think that one was a 1960s; it had a young Ricky Shroder in it
West Side Story -screenplay/musical -my teenage boys loved it
and my 5 year old, who was only allowed to watch a little,
went around singing, "When you're a jet, you're a jet all the way,
from your first cigarette, to your last dying day" for weeks -much
to the chagrin of his teachers!
The Bells of Saint Mary's -we LOVED that one!

Anyway, there have been others but none that I can think of off-hand.
Any suggestions?
Can anyone suggest some

If your son liked West Side Story, then he might like Newsies-- I know its not an oldie ('93), but your cute story got me thinking of musicals. He might want to fast-forward thru the slower bits, but he'd love some of the music numbers-- the boys I nanny for love them!

Hmm, I'll have to think of a list for you later... can't seem to think now....

I second National Velvet. That movie was the closest I ever got to having a horse phase. :)

Also The Sound of Music, Boys Town, The Wizard of Oz, The Incredible Mr. Limpet, and the original Cheaper by the Dozen.

oh, i LOVE newsies! i remember watching the premiere of it on tv when it came out! i think that newsies and other new historical movies could help get kids interested in old movies. i'm sure movies like annie increased my interest in the golden era when i was a kid. an even newer movie i recently enjoyed was molly: and american girl on the homefront.

The content is a little heavy for smaller kids but both my kids loved To Kill a Mockingbird. My youngest saw it when he was around 10 and he loved it even then. I think they found it appealing because the movie is told from the children's point of view.

I've found that kids respond really well to classic comedies. I started my son on Abbott an Costello, Bob and Bings Road movies and Red skelton's, 'Whistling in the Dark'. Andy Hardy movies are good too, Andy's always getting into some trouble and ends up doing the right thing in the end. Most recently we watched Lost Horizon and I was surprised that he sat still through the whole show and said how much he liked it.

THANKS!!

What wonderful suggestions!
I would never have thought of To Kill A Mockingbird and how COULD I have forgotten Boys' Town!! Anne of Green Gables, there's another one I forgot about AND it reminded me of the Heidi movie..... I LOVED that one and I bet the boys would too!

Lizzie, I will be buying 'The Best Old Movies For Families' guide for sure! I didn't know such a book existed!!

Mike, the Andy Hardy movies are a WONDERFUL idea, as are the older comedies! We saw an old one, I think it was Abbot and Costello recently, about a mummy, where they try to save a beautiful woman from some curse and end up having to float in the mummy case down some water... It was a RIOT and we all enjoyed it!

Thank you all so much! I'm writing down all of the suggestions and PLEASE add more as you think of them. I'll keep my eye on this thread for sure!
