yes and color is the hardest part for me to decide, and ribbon, i love the design i have, but i'd like Art to do his talent as well. I'm glad you like the design, i will start messing with colors soon.

HI Coble..
As far as the design of the hat goes, what you have drawn is easy, no sweat. I agree with the brim width on you but my questions at this point would go toward your personality ie: how self conscious are you, how conservative? This sort of thing help match the hat with the personality. If I match it closely enough, you will wear it all the time.

thanks guys for repyling. I was thinking the same thing with lighter colors. I also think a 2 in a half inch brim would be the right size. Crown height i'd like to be tall but i'm leaving that as well as the ribbon up to Art. Art i have been waiting for your reply. Dealing with my personality, i'm an artist meaning i draw, paint, sculpt, do pottery, i have been playing guitar for 11 years, currently working on a cd. I am also a writer. I am very outgoing, but also reserved in the sense where i like to stay home and drink herbal tea and read a good book. On the other side, i'm not scared to get in front of an audience and act out. Take for example i went to cirque de soleil, and they picked me out of the crowd, and danced with me on the side of the stage. I was actually hoping to be picked. I have a light green suit that i wear to church, and wear the blazer on occasion during the week. I also wear light colors, light reds, light greens, just very nuetral colors. I wear button up shirts with the two pockets on both sides in these colors as well, like the safari type of shirts. I will post a few pics of examples of clothes that i wear including a picture of me in what i'm mostly in. Which is a fedora, button up shirt with a vest, dress shoes, with slacks and sometimes jeans. I also wear casual kacki pants with button up shirt and suspenders, i'll usually wear that when i wear my newsboy cap. Here are the examples. If there is any way for me to get felt samples let me know.

now this next picture is not me its from banana republic but it shows my casual dress, i am also posting these two photos because i'm buying these clothes soon.

then this is as casual as i get with t-shirt and jeans, but the red shirt will help you dealing with my light neutral colors.

i love the outdoors, riding my bicycle, hiking, camping, fishing. I hope this helps Art, let me know if you have any ideas of colors for the hat, or anyone else on the lounge as well. I'm open to ideas here, because i guess you could say i want it to be perfect hahaha, but also its going to be a hat i'm going to wear everyday, i'd like it to fit casual but also able to dress up and wear it. I'm glad you think this hat is easy Art. Now dealing with the ribbon, i do like that thin string with the button type thing around the ribbon. here's an example.

http://homepage.mac.com/erich222/lounge/knox1.JPG

I just really like it, but if it doesn't work with a wider ribbon, its okay not to have it there. Thanks again guys for your help, i like the way its turning out, its got that classic look i was looking for.

Samples are all a part of my process Coble but I send those once there is a deposit made. I really have to be careful of my time, thus I'm not on the Lounge as much as I'd like but as much as I can. I really do not want to go through the entire process in a public forum where my competitors can copy my every move. I have enough of those trying now without my assistance. Hope you understand

Just my 2cents - if you want the sort of look you have in your pics, a two "in a half" - I guess you mean two and a half inch - is going to be too large. Are you looking for a stingy look ? In that case a 2inch to max 2 1/4inch is what you may be seeking...

Measure a hat`s brim that you are trying to copy. The hat you are wearing looks like it may even be under 2 inches.

Enjoy the process!

i am actually trying to get away from a stingy brim. I'm looking for a larger brim fedora. I'm coming close to finding the color i like a lot. I have been browsing through art's hall of fame section. Thinking about what i'd be able to wear with what i wear, and also what i'd love to wear in general. I will post a photo of the color i decide, it might be a photo of one of your guys hats so it will be publicity on your behalf. I will be a light toned felt.
this has been an enjoyable journey, and looking forward to talking more with Art on this hat.

my stetson in the photo has an inch in a half or inch and 3/4's i want something larger due to the fact that i think a larger brim can change your style a little, but also give you more to work with and give even more character.

Just starting out the process with Art as well, I think my hardest decision is the color. I know I want a 2 1/2 inch brim and about a medium size crown but the color is the hardest for me. Do I get the granite and sacrifice a little casual wear or do I get the pecan and sacrifice a little dressier wear or do I just get charcoal and saw screw it, haha? However, if I could afford 2 I know exactly what I would get, haha. Just from talking with Art a few times, he really knows his stuff and once its your turn to work on details with him, I'm sure he will make a fantastic recommendation and you will be throughly satisfied

dwebber i totally agree it is the hardest part, neophyte like the post man.

here is a reference for Art on the bash of the hat, i would like it to be this prominant, and the width of the brim is what i'm going for as well with the drawing i posted.

i'd like to get a very prominant teardrop like in the maltese falcon hat worn by bogart.

Aureliano i love the color of your mojave that i think thats what i'd like for my hat, here is Aureliano's beauty of a hat. Art i have an idea for the bow for the ribbon, i'd like to have binding done, but i'm going to have you pick the ribbon, i don't want the ribbon to match the binding though. Also i'm thinking of getting the mojave with a turqouise lining if thats possible.

Have you considered oxblood? That's the color of Johnny Depp's hat in Public Enemies. It's a very cool purple color, and I bet it goes with everything. Seems to be all the rage these days. If you wear lots of black, you can't go wrong with red or purple. You'll be like a race car or medieval coat of arms, with an immediately eye catching color scheme. For what it's worth, my next hat will probably be forest green with brown trim - like a tree, if trees got lots of compliments when they walked around.

Really, that's pretty cool. Go for it. Mine's gonna be the same everything, size wise, as the one I have now, pretty much, except with a homburg bash.

Whew...great. I love green hats. I also liked the idea of brown trim.

Difference is, I'd go classic fedora shape. That's pretty much as far as I've thought it out lol.

Mostly I just don't want the same old brown, black, grey and navy blue tetrarchy that dominate the scene. At first I thought, well, I'll get a brown, black, grey and navy blue hat and be all set, but then I thought it'd be boring, so my current plan is cabernet, forest green and oxblood, and maybe a light blue like
0917072.jpg
. Yellow would be cool, but I don't see any felts yellow enough. I'm talking, Dick Tracy yellow. Yellow and black trim would be great - like some big angry bee.

Neo -- just back slowly away from the camera. We all know what the Campdraft looks like. No need to constantly post it in every thread imaginable here on the Hats Forum. ;)

Understood. You're absolutely right, Jimmy.

Seems I may be taking advantage of TFL, and possibly testing the patience of my fellow Loungers, in order to stave off the urge to buy a hat.
Looking back, I have been almost too active on TFL the last few days. I have gone and deleted my recent pics and some of my posts from the various threads. Don't wanna clutter up the Lounge :).
No more, I promise :).

At any rate, Coble, good luck to you, and I'm glad that you're closer to knowing exactly what you'd like out of your VS.

i did think of doing this hat in the colors of johnny depps public enemies hat, it is still in mind, but i will be posting colored drawings tomorrow with the new ribbon design that i hope Art can do, which i have no problem saying he will do this ribbon really well, its nothing new to him just switched up with a few ideas. The public enemies hat color and ribbon color would look nice especially since i have his haircut from the movie, but i have my decision made i think. I want to test that color out on this hat, but as of right now i do like the mojave color, i'm thinking ribbon would with a rust look to it if Art has that in stock, liner will have a turqouise color. I will say though the colors of the public enemies hat would look nice on this style, maybe i'd have to make a second one same style but with the public enemies color of felt and ribbon. thanks for your opinions i will take them into consideration. As i do wear a lot of different colors, including black.

i sent Art an e-mail, and will post my idea on the ribbon tomorrow. As well as final judgement on felt color.

The Maltese Falcon hat doesn't have that steep a rake to it. It does have a deep bash since it has a 6" crown open, but is about 5" at the top and 4.25" in the back when bashed. It would have an arc with the front (4.75") slightly higher than the back rather than the diagonal drop in that great looking Mojave, and your drawing. Here's a couple pictures of the one that Art made for me. More are in the Art thread:

Kao, thanks for your details on your hat. Its a beautiful hat that you have. It really brings that era alive. I have been talking with Art. Sent him my drawing, and well i ended up designing the ribbon with every single ribbon style he did and i didn't realize i did that. Guess i couldn't make up my mind. So i did mention i'd like a light felt, and that i'm leaving the felt color and the ribbon color and design up to him, all i asked was for it to represent the 1930's, and to be really classy, but also where i can wear it casual or in a suit.

i will eventually buy a borsalino, but my eyes are set on an ART Creation, the man can make beautiful hats.

Forget about the Borsalino (unless its vintage). Art makes much better hats at the same price, or less. Modern Borsalinos are not worth the money IMHO when we still have Art around.
