Need Help With Saks Blazer (pics included)

This isn't vintage but it is classic - a Navy 2 button blazer.

I just won it on an Ebay auction and the label reads Saks Fifth Avenue. It should be shipped soon but I'm hoping someone can tell which company makes Saks house brands?

It was listed as $1395 retail but I got it for $40. I know, you probably get what you pay for but I'm hoping I got a deal.

If not - no biggie since its only $40. I trust the company I won it from - Lord R Colton - but wonder what your thoughts are on it.

$40 for a nice blazer is a good deal.

I have no idea who makes jackets for Saks, but I have some of their clothes and they are of very good quality.

Personally, I am not the biggest fan of low gorge cuts (though I have a few), but that is a nice blazer for showing off a very nice tie.

THANKS! That's what I am talking about - I didn't even put much thought into the high or lowness of the gorge cut!

I only have short ties, so I have the probelm that when I wear something with a low whatever you call it, my tie is higher than the bottom, and it flops out.

It my understanding that gorge is being confused here with button stance. Button stance is where the buttons set and gorge refers to where the lapel is notched. See picture:

This jacket has both a lower gorge (where the lapel notch is) and a low button stance (where the buttons are). The gorge is not as low as some, however.

Maybe I'm wrong, again, but I always thought the gorge is where the lapels meet and stance is the distance between the buttons.

My understanding is the same as AlanC's. Button stance refers to the placement of buttons on the jacket generally, which includes both their position on the jacket and their distance from one another. Higher button stance=shorter lapels and less shirtfront/tie showing; lower button stance=longer lapels and more shirtfront/tie visible.

The gorge is where the lapels and collar meet on either side; that is, where the notch or peak is formed.

BTW, Charvet calls the area from where the jacket closes, up to the top of the shirt collar, the V-Zone. It seems like a usefull term though I've never heard it used outside Place Vend?¥me.

But will salesmen and tailors know what you mean if you talk about gorge in reference to the notch? This may be a case of misappropriation that we'll have to live with (cf. journalists' misuse of the word 'decimate'). I first heard about gorge when I worked at a men's clothing shop twenty years ago and it was thought to be where the lapels meet. The lapels meet at the chest - high gorge. The lapels meet at the stomach - low gorge. Indeed, I've not met any tailors that used the term to reference to the notch, though I'll be the first to say that most tailors don't know what they're talking about anyway.

I can live with it, as it helps me identify those who are not familiar with the fundamentals of tailoring. Like when I take a person sailing and ask them to cast off the bow line and they untie the stern line.

I'm sure Saks has used any number of vendors to make their house brand clothing. When you get it country of origin would help as would any RN or CA numbers you could find. Some makers also have distinctive size tags, etc.

The Saks blazer arrived and it seems to be a pretty well made garment. I can't find much else to identify where it came from.

The label though has SAKS FIFTH AVENUE "printed" and not "signed" (cursive) like I have seen in other Saks item. Could that indicate its a good SAKS and not a outlet SAKS? Or vice versa?

Saks Fifth Avenue is a department store and doesn't create a brand just for their outlet, so be rest assured that your item should be genuine Saks.

You should post a photo of yourself in it.

Who on earth have you worked with in the past? :eusa_doh: The few tailors/cutters I've talked with have a very good understanding of what they make. I'm sorry if you've had any bad experiences.

I think the blazer looks good. The gorge and button stance are pretty classic, and if you got what's worth over $1000, you hopefully got something well made as well. Wear it in good health as they say.
