Need help ID'ing spooky 1940s murder mystery

Need help ID'ing spooky 1940s murder mystery movie:

It took place in a spooky but LAVISHLY ELEGANT huge old house, and had some gal who was MUTE (seem to remember her wearing a maid's apron? unsure), and about to become the next murder victim. The murderer wore gloves. That's all I can remember about it - can't remember year, actors, but would like to pick it up on DVD.

No, this was an original 1940's movie, black & white.
