Need help dating a Vintage Denim Jean Jacket :)

Hi, I'm trying to put a date on this jacket, any help would be greatly appreciated. I've asked on other boards but everyone seems to want to talk about the embroidery on the back which is fine but I would like to know how old it may be.

It's very faded and worn and the double row gold stitching on the front below the pockets and on the back of the sleeves are hard to see.

The back of the snaps are engraved or stamped with T I, this is on the back of every snap.

I've searched it inside out for a label but could not find one or evidence of it ever having had one.

Thanks in advance~! Tori~

I'm sure one of our resident denim gurus can give you a clear answer on this, but for now (and by way of a bump...)... At a guess, I'd put it sometime in the Sixties at the earliest, maybe into the Seventies. It looks to be a copy of a Levis (any labels on it - is the frog on the pocket an addition later along with the rear embroidery, or is it a maker's logo?) jacket. The dual front pocket look, afaik, came in in the early Sixties, while handwarmer pockets at hip level were someting Levis didn't introduce until - I think - the Seventies. So that puts a vague timeframe on it, if I'm right....

The buttons and lack of label indicate it's not one of the big 3, and since Janis died in 1970 the best you could hope for is that it was made between her breakout performance at Monterey in 67 and the year following her death.
As the man said, 'fruitpockets' on levi jackets came in about 72, so that narrows it some more, as I'm sure the smaller labels all followed suit quite quickly.

Hi, and thank you for your responses.

I realize it is not one of the big 3, that was one of the first things I researched and found that nothing about my jacket resembled any of those makers as far as buttons and other identifying marks went.

I was hoping you'll wouldn't try and date it by the embroidery of the rose and Janis Joplin's name as those could have been added as late as 2009, not that that they were but just saying. :)

On another board someone mentioned something about the length of the collar points, they measure about 3" or 2¼ from the fold, if that helps.

Also in answer to Edward's question, the frog is a hand sewn on applicate.

So, mid 60's to early 70's?

Thanks again, Tori~ ;)

I know exactly where you're coming from here... I remember back in the wake of the Doors movie in.... what, 1991?.... dead Sixties rockstars were somewhat en vogue for a while, so the embroidery could have dated to that period.... or any time some kid raided a parents' wardrobe and record collection... ;)

That helps to put it as an older piece, in my eye, then - I don't think I've ever seen that sort of obvious or complicated branding on something truly vintage (though, of course, never say never and all that).

So, mid 60's to early 70's?

That'd be my estimate based on, as the good Doctor notes above, the assumption that the smaller labels back then would have followed the lead of the more established brands like Levis - as they do nowadays.
