I purchased from an old estate an early peacoat that I need your opinion on.
It has no maker label or markings but has the cordaroy pocket lining. The wool is close cut fine wool, dark blue-black. the plastic buttons have the normal anchor/rope.
I thought it was just an early WW2 peacoat but there are brass buttons on the sleeves with verdis (green stuff). Cleaning one of these I found them to be Superior made buttons with the following on the front "Canton Police". The buttons show a rising sun over a mountain-and what appears to be flags.

Any idea what this peacoat might be? Never seen one like it.

Got a picture of the front of the coat? If so, I can give you a better idea of the era. If it is WWII era, the town may have purchased some surplus peacoats to outfit it's officers. Definitely sounds like a description of an issue peacoat.

Some of the police departments--Chicago comes to mind--used a coat similar to the peacoat, but longer, for their walking officers.

The first Canton that I thought of is Canton, Ohio. Canton's population, at it's peak in the late 40's to early50's of about 116,00, probably wouldn't support much of a walking force. Population has now dropped to about 80,000. Also their logo isn't currently as you described. Of course there are a bunch of other Cantons out there.
