I just saw this headline on the Christian Science Monitor website, but couldn't copy the link. So here's the Wikipedia article. This is EARTHSHAKING news. Today, June 1, is NATIONAL DONUT DAY! I kid you not. Started by the Salvation Army in 1938, in commemoration of the coffee and donuts they served to American soldiers in WW I.

You can't have a donut with the hole -- which was invented, they claim, by a Maine sea captain named Hanson Crockett Gregory -- born just a few miles down the road from here. His grandson, a Local Character named Fred Crockett, spent his whole life spreading the story of his ancestor's achievement. The peak of his career was achieved in 1941, when his story was pronounced the one true and official origin of the donut hole in a debate held at the Hotel Astor in New York.

In his later years, Fred was the impresario of the annual Hole In The Donut Festival held in Camden, Maine. A friend of mine was crowned Donut Queen for this event, and cavorted up Main Street in a bathing suit, wearing an inner tube with DONUT QUEEN painted on it across her middle.

I would rather rob a bank in Chicago than mess with a Dunkin Donut shop. They give the cops free coffee to hang out in them.
