In personal opinion, believe in large ribbons like better kind to look a Fedora hat, seem with more sobriety.
The narrow ribbons are used in travel hats or indiana hats and have an aspect or appearence like "country-city" fashion, sometimes this narrow ribbons are designs in leather and with big brim can seem like cowboy hat.
The best models dress hats come with large ribbons. You can see Stetson, Mayser, Habig, Borsalino, Dobbs, and others important brands.
Yes, I, too, think that the wider the ribbon, the dressier the hat. The same goes with edge treatments. A raw edge is the least dressy, while a curled and bound edge is the most dressy (think Homburg here).
Personally, I like the mid-range ribbons the best, the 9 and 12 ligne widths. Most of my hats are either thin-ribboned or mid-ribboned.
