When I get mine, I want the bash and the brim exactly like you have it. It seems all of the photos of the Federation I've seen show the front brim with that very distinctive, severe, straight, down slope to it (I really like that). When you snap the brim down on the Federation, is that the angle it automatically takes or do you have to fiddle with it? I ask because I have absolutely no faith in my ability to modify it :(.

Neither my regular fed nor the deluxe came with that severe, Indy-style turn down on the front end of the brim, but it's a very easy thing to put in place. All you need do is (with the brim in the snapped down position) steam it over a boiling kettle, bend to the angle you want it to hold when down, and hold it there until it cools and stiffens up again. Simplest part of the bash, IMO!

I've always thought that the original Raiders hat was an Akubra. In the documentary the costumer refers to the hat they used as the Australian model. The block and height of the crown Akubra uses for that hat have always been spec for Raiders... They just look right, and check out pics for comparison. The softness of the Raider's hat in the movie can be do to beating the crap out of the hat before filming, though I think that the Raider's hats are Akubras. I don't know of any other maker at the time other than a cowboy hatter that was doing crowns that tall and that squared off when Raiders came out.

Take a look at the seaplane scenes specifically.

I believe I read it here at tfl, that the original "Raiders Hat" is a Herbert Johnson 'Poet' which was modified per the instructions of Lucas and Speilberg. If I remember correctly, they just walked into some prominent hat and or clothing store in London and looked for an appropriate hat which was to be a mix of a fedora/cowboy (western).

Great looking hat, Caparzo! citRon asked about a tawny fawn fed in a C-crown. Here's a pic of mine. I'm sorry I don't have a pic on hand with me weaing it. The C-Crown definitely takes the "extreme" height out of the hat. After creasing, my Fed III is about 4.5" at the highest point.

The poet over the years has changed shape and looks. When I got my two ove the years, both were extra thick felt and they were very different in their blocking. Herbert Johnson says it was a poet, I talked to Richard Jaggs-Fowler on the phone several times while he was working at Herbert Johnson. The costumer says it was the Australian model. Their poet a few years ago resembled nothing like what was on screen until Indygear got involved. Herbert Johnson carries felts from other makers and the hat being an Akubra open crown that was on the shelf while they were looking for the proper hat isn't out of the question.

:arated: What he said- or does anyone have a Federation that does not have a Raiders bash, but maybe a c-crown or teardrop shape?

Try this thread. It's got some great looking Feds there.

And that's a really nice bash on that one Caparzo.

Caparzo, it was your post here that convinced me to get a Fed IV in tawny fawn. It's a gorgeous color! After about 6 different bashes, I went with a teardrop, and by that I mean that it's an elongated C-crown:

Was this on some documentary on a DVD that I might also catch? Sounds intriguing!

Yes actually... Special edition box set. From personal experience, the Poet tends to be whatever they grabbed off the shelf and fit the bill and not really any particular block or felt style. My 90s ones were super low crowned and Rcihard Jaggs-Fowler told me himself as a kind of apology hen I asked him about the discrepancies in the poets that I bought that the poet was their basic model with which they can alter the brim. He told me that ford and Spielberg came in the store and they all began looking at different hats on ford. The costumer has a completely different story. I don't know, but talking to Richard over the phone from back when he was working at the shop I tend to think that the Poet at the time was the closest thing that they had on hand that resembled the Indy hat. I'm thinking if the costumer was right and my doubts about Richard's recollection are right, that the hat as the costumer says, could be an australian model. And seeing that Akubra was making hats with that crown height and I don't believe Christy's or other UK makers we... Well I'm not thinking it far fetched at all that they could have used an Akubra to fit the bill.

Caparzo,
That's one handsome hat! Your bashing job is excellent! I'm getting worried about the influence every one here in lounge is having on me! The temptation to buy is sometimes more that I can bear. :p You did an excellent job in choosing a hat that looks good on you!
