My NY Police leather jackets

I recently promised to get some pics together to show a couple of the original NY leather Police jackets I have in my collection. One is a Deputy Sheriff jacket from Essex County, New Jersey, a size 46 with great patina, clearly has seen service wear. Brass Talon zip and warm lining. It fits me as a size 44 with room for layering. The second is a stunning heavy horsehide jacket from 1978 for an Officer in Suffolk County New York (strange I have two from County names familiar to those of us in the South East of England!). It has a two-way Talon zip, zip-out lining and is in pretty much 'as-new' condition. The horsehide is subtle and really comfortable to wear, marked as a size 44L it again fits me well. I have always been a fan of vintage US Police jackets, remembering them being available back in the 1970/80's from the likes of Ken Calder's Thrift Shop and Kensington Market. My homage to Joe Strummer in the pics as he wore some really cool Police jackets after The Clash had toured the States.....

Great jackets... my brother is a Lieutenant in the Essex County Sherriff's department, and unfortunately you see very little leather worn by the Sheriffs anymore. Interestingly, a Deputy Sheriff badge denotes not a paid officer, but a volunteer who pays for all of his own equipment, training and works for no compensation.

That's really interesting info, thank you, that might explain that the Essex County jacket has stitch marks for previous patches on the shoulders so he may have bought or acquired the jacket second-hand, sensible if he had to buy his own equipment.

Makes a lot of sense. The Deputy Sheriff program is very popular with Doctors, Lawyers and other professionals that like to have a little adventure in their free time. They also draw a number of people who are waiting for acceptance as full Sheriffs. They have all the same powers as a regular Sheriff, carry a gun, etc... often used as security for VIPs, in times of emergency, and also to patrol high crime areas. Quite a hobby. Thanks for sharing your photos.

Very nice. And they look good on you.
For me, it's always nice to see the old police leather jackets as they always fondly remind me of officers Renko and Hill and the others in Hill Street Blues and I loved those jackets - then and now. Iconic.
Thanks for posting.
