My how men's straw hats have changed since 1885

Image found on the internet, featuring circa 1885, or so the source site claimed, of Frontier Army officers. I posted it because of the curious style of straw hat two of them are wearing. Not boaters as I think of boaters rounded crowns, brims not quite out as wide as I would have expected, and not large enough to qualify as the Amish style straws. Anybody know anything about that style. Not much sun protection there, they might as well have stuck with their kepis.

(BTW, I intend to get one of those five button sack coats repros, minus the shoulder insignia, and with plain round buttons, to wear with my anglican clergy collar for the style look of the guy on the far right.)

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Check out the straw in the middle. It looks like something a modern day Amish would wear. In fact, with that thin ribbon I know of a few fellas around here that would favor this style. ;)

Thin Ribbon, yes, but not really my style. (Needs a creased crown) Nice hat though.;) How about the moustache on thet guy in the middle, standing?!
