Well, as of lastnight when I completed my first route I am a bona-fide milk man. (Yeah I know, THEY STILL EXIST!)This is so great! The hours are...eh 11-5 or so but the money is surprisingly really good. Anybody in the OC area get their milk / dairy products delivered? And...anybody know where I can get a milk mans uniform? I think I might just have on made.

That sounds like an interesting job. When I was growing up, my neighbor across the street still had his dairy delivered. I thought that is was really neat. Having two very young children and a wife that loves milk and cheese, I wish we had delivery in my area.

Congratulations!

My Dad was a milkman and he loved it.

Over here, the hours are about 4am to midday so he used to love the peace and quiet that he got from it.

They're still common in England. No milkman where I live, but my mum has one.

OUTSTANDING!! Do you deliver in period clothing?

Scott

Thanks everyone!

I want to, cap and all! Last night I went out in a newsboy cap, jeans, russet boots, short sleeve button down and a jacket. It was actually really fun, and plus learning the color codes for milk is interesting also. I'm researching the uniform now.

From 1935 : For wintertime, looks like a shirt and tie, Ike jacket with matching cuffed trousers, brown (?) shoes and a peaked cap could work.

For summertime, a longsleeved white Oxford shirt, black bowtie, white slacks (cut like khakis) and a black-brimmed white peaked cap.

Well I've done a bit of research and found some former milkmen through some vets organizations.
White shirt & trousers, black belt, black cap toe shoes and something reminiscent of a 1930s cops octagonal cap with an black leather bill. But it was different for each company.

Thanks for the ref. pics Story.

Theres an 70% chance I'm moving to Georgia in 4-6 months...the boss might be looking to start one up down there also.

Milkmen are one of those things you're glad to know still exist somewhere, even if there aren't any where you live. Hope you enjoy it!

Our neighborhood milkman disappeared when I was about eight years old, but I remember him wearing grey cotton coveralls with the dairy's logo sewn on the back -- and a white shirt and tie underneath. The peaked military cap was standard just about everywhere, I imagine.

I think I actually pay a bit more for milk just to support my local Alta Dena Milkman. He has a huge route all over southern Calif. Anyone in Southern California who wants a milkman, call Alta Dena Dairy. They deliver all the milk products plus bacon, eggs, etc. I have never been up early enough to see how he dresses though! My husband remembers a horse drawn milk truck in Detroit in the '50s, and when I visited Liverpool in the late 70s I saw a horse drawn milk wagon! They said it was the only thing that fit down the narrow alleys, but it dawn on me to ask why they couldn't just use the street in front of the house.

Yup!! We deliver everything, even coffeemate, orange juice and yogurt! Lol The only time you'll be able to catch the milk man is between the hours of 11pm and 5am. I was in Ladera Ranch last night and I was trying to be as quiet as possible with trading out this customers soy milk, the porch light comes on and 3 seconds later the door opens. I wasn't expecting that AT ALL!

Ladara! I know exactly where that is, my old man used to live there after my parents got divorced. Nice area. Congratulations about the job too.

Having a job where one may deal with the public(although that may not be often considering your hours)can be enjoyable. Of course, your schedule does not allow your to linger for any long time, but a few cheerful words can make one's day(or night).
