My first vintage suit

Hi all,

I recently purchased this Montague Burton suit. I was told it was 1940's but I found this little tag on the inside pocket that says 07/10/54 on it. Presumably that's the date it was produced? I only ask because I read somewhere that this label was discontinued around 1949.

Very nice find! And dated as well. That one is very wearable for just about anything.

Never mind the 1954 date.

British suit styles were quite conservative... the typical late 30's and 40's style was dominant until 1956.
Most 50's British suits are almost indistiguishable from earlier years.

Old labels were used up even after the design changed.

It's a perfect 1940's style suit from 1954. Enjoy it!

I'm also not entirely persuaded that date was stamped by Burton when the suit was made. Dry cleaners often had idiosyncratic ways of marking garments. I have vintage suits with all kinds of weird scrawls and dates on the pocket bags and tags. As others have said, stylistically it looks indistinguishable from a late 1940's piece.

I have a '52' dated Burton jacket with the same style of stamp and label.

I hate to necro threads, but damn, that's a find if I've ever seen one. One hell of a first suit, and in a very conservative color and pattern. Hope you've worn this one with pride.

You can still find suits like these in the vintage market. The difference from, say, 4 years ago, is that now they either 1) are sold by resellers at astronomic prices, or 2) are in nearly unwearable conditions, or 3) appear in some rare private auctions which are wildly gang-banged by the plethora of hungry people wanting it (and then back to point 1).

I have to say that, still, sometimes you seel beautiful suits sold for peanuts. These, however, are almost invariably pieces from 40s and 50s, with non-fancy details. Just few days ago a 1942 American tan-beige suit was sold for 63 £ on eBay.

I saw that one. Too big for me to bid on, but I would have if my size. That was a gorgeous suit.
