Hi, sorry for posting a few different threads today.

I'm curious about the Herbert Johnson Poet from this website.

Now, the hat on the website looks quite good, nice colour, nice crease etc. I'm wondering if that's what it actually looks like if you ordered one when it arrives.

The other thing that I'm curious about is that the creases they've put into that hat look quite different from the creases on the original Raiders hat. What I'm noticing is that it has a kind of diamond crease, the back of the hat appears to be way higher than the front, and the side dents go a lot further back.

I actually think it looks quite good personally, and was considering copying it on my Fed 4 that I ordered. I'm just wondering what people think of it, and if anyone can tell me what the real hat looks like if I was to order one (which I wasn't planning to btw, but I'd really like to know the difference between the hat on the website and a real one).

I can tell you the hat looks a lot like the one on the website. I've bought my Indy hat at Swaine Adeney Brigg and the day I got it I knew I had to crease it myself. That said, there seems to be a slight difference between Indy's hat seen in Raiders of the Lost Ark and the one I've bought. The sides of the crown of Indy's hat are parallel to each other and not slightly inclined. So if you want a hat that is a perfect replica of the original Poet Hat, that may be not for you. Hope that helps!

Evidently, there's been some back and forth between ROTLA costume designer, Deborah Nadoolman and Richard Swales, the HJ store manager who fit Ford for the Raider's fedora. Nadoolman said in an interview that she chose Herbert Johnson's tall crowned and wide brimmed "Australian" model for the original ROTLA fedora. The HJ manager maintains that it was their "Poet" that Ford was fitted for. Herbert Johnson did in fact discontinue their Australian model after the making of ROTLA. I'm not committed to suggesting that HJ's Australian model was the original Raider's fedora, but it would explain why the proceeding TOD and LC fedoras, (which were Poets), looked so different from the original ROFTLA fedora. Just a thought. There is a picture of the Australian model online creased to the Raider's fedora. It looks a whole lot like the original. Again, something to think about...

Nadoolman has said, "I had to have a hat that if you saw it in silhouette would be immediately recognizable". After many attempts they settled on a fedora from the Herbert Johnson Hat Company of Saville Row, London, a high-end hatter to the Royal family.

There have always been conflicting reports as to the exact model chosen to become the Indiana Jones fedora. Nadoolman is quoted as saying, "I saw a hat with a very wide brim and the crown was a little bit too high. It was their Australian model and with a couple of fittings, we got the hat right for Harrison".

Richard Swales, who was manager at Herbert Johnson and fitted Ford for the original Raiders fedora's has stated adamantly in the past that it was the "Poet" model which was chosen in the end and has since been touted as the actual fedora worn by Harrison Ford in the films, although Herbert Johnson has never sold them under the official Indiana Jones license. The Poet had been a part of the Herbert Johnson line-up for some time and remains so to this day."

I see it pretty often when I do a search on the Indy fedoras. It's a pretty rumpled up mess now. I know the original block for the ROTLA fedora has vanished, and the HJ Australian has long been discontinued. Like I said though, I'm not fully committed to saying that the HJ Australian was the original ROTLA fedora.

New HJ hatter has located some of the original blocks and has researched HJ files re felt,ribbon,liner,etc.Interesting to find that Borsalino actually made at least one version for HJ.
They're taking orders for a remake now but they're pretty pricey,imo.

Nice! That would be great. Wonder if the ROTLA fedora is one of those blocks they found? I'm almost afraid to see the prices. I'm not as young as I used to be and I don't think my heart could stand the sticker shock. I was thinking that Borsalino made both the TOD and the LC versions?
