Curl

Any tips on getting it to slope down a bit in front? Should the old kitchen kettle suffice?

My lovely old Dobbs wants to curl up more or less the same all around, which makes me look like a hooligan.

Even that is better than the way it looked when I saw it on eBay:

The pheasant feather trim came right off revealing the original band.

Hard shell - depends on whay you mean. A Gossamer shell coverd with fabric is a "true" hard shell. though generically any stiffened hat can be called har shell, any bowler, topper, boater, pith, fez can be considered hard.

At the moment concentrating on Toppers. I have considered branding a bowler but no desision finalised yet.

As far as in-house, =I still have the formal bowler in the back of my mind as specalist bespoke for the future.

I've been wearing it daily... at least for the last few days. I've been down and I suspect the bowler is a way of showing the world I feel a little black inside.

You could always adopt a black dog and name it Winston Churchill.

Seriously, Winston is my inspiration when I feel low or over the hill.

I wonder why you don't see many brown (even dark brown) derbies. Were they just not made? or did they not survive?

Brown was considered a "trade" blue collar worker colour. So were yes extensively, but often worn to full use.

Executive gentlemen's city bowlers would more likely be kept and available nowdays, and thus were more common in black.
