Hello Friends,
It's great to be back here after a long leave of absence... mostly medical related but still one heck of a journey for me. As you may recall, I'm a 5 time open heart surgery survivor over the past 39 years of my life with a partly mechanical heart made of carbon fiber and wasn't expected to survive the surgeries due to a congenital heart condition I was born with, but with a lot of love and prayer I defied the odds, married the woman of my dreams and saw the days that my 2 little girls were born now ages 9 and 4. To show my gratitude, I've dedicated the rest of my life to inspiring others to live heart healthy lives. Back in early 2012 I wound up having knee surgery due to constant internal bleeding issues in my left knee (turned out to be an issue with my blood thinning medication plus leaking capillaries and torn meniscus which were both repaired and no further knee issues). Then later that year in June 2012 I was diagnosed with possible testicular cancer which required permanent removal of one of my testicles which was swollen for biopsy... turned out not to be cancer (thank God!) but internal bleeding again so my blood thinning medication was reduced and I've been fine ever since. Then a week after that surgery I was told by my federal government agency that I and 6 other IT Specialists were being laid off which ultimately led to me landing my dream job with a different federal government agency using my IT work to ultimately help provide healthcare to folks who can't afford it. Then earlier this year I was diagnosed with the early onset of Parkinson's disease (my only symptoms being muscle stiffness and shaky right hand) but because it was detected early I've been responding very well to medications and should lead a normal, active life as well as playing with my daughters and coaching them in soccer and basketball.
As you all can see, life has a way of knocking me down, but the true joy in life that I've found is that it's the DIFFICULT times and how we choose to deal with them that shape and define our character. I choose to see life as the proverbial "glass half full" and not half empty. Life tries to knock me down but then I just get right back up with a smile and continue to fight the fight. I wake up every morning, take that first deep breath, and thank God for that privilege.
Life has been good for me otherwise... I'm enjoying the motivational talks I give to people and will be the keynote speaker during National Heart Month at my federal agency. At the advice of my friends I'm considering writing a book about my unique life journey and making it a motivational thing at the same time.

Anyhow, now onto my jackets. First my beloved Aero NYPD jacket that I had made in honor of my police chief grandfather in India who died a few years before I was born, made it into a major international car magazine and I'm including a picture below plus the link to the online magazine feature in case any of you wish to read more about my story.

The second jacket is a project I recently completed. Some of you may recall a thread I made a few years back (feel free to search by my username) about a turquoise leather café racer jacket I had made by a company called MakeYourOwnJeans located in India. Since turquoise is my favorite color and car color, plus is symbolic of "open communication of the heart" from a color symbolism standpoint, I had this jacket made. However, I took this a step further and wasn't happy with the traditional café racer jacket so I decided to create my own style of jacket that combines a café racer style with a car coat/jacket style and came up with basically a longer café racer style jacket. Recently I decided, due to the fact that I'm affected by the U.S. Government furlough and stuck at home, that I'd undertake a project to repaint that leather jacket the exact color of my car which is a metallic turquoise BMW color known as Atlantis Metallic. Wearing this jacket will be particularly good for me when I give my motivational talks so the audience can see the color that symbolizes my heart work. The jacket repaint project was an absolute success and what really helped the jacket in the end to retain the paint color was using the Leatherique products that I typically use on my BMW car seats... that helped the jacket retain the paint, make the leather supple and resist cracking, etc.

Onto the pics...

Old color of the turquoise jacket. Love this pic... I'm one of the coaches on my daughter's basketball team and this was a complimentary picture given to me

New color of the jacket - BMW Atlantis Metallic paint color... though you can't tell from the pics, the shoes I'm wearing match the jacket and are probably the most comfortable driving shoes I've ever worn... Ferragamo Parigi in a dark turquoise colored suede

Jacket is already developing a nice patina in the elbows, shoulder area and anywhere else where movement is common...

Thanks for looking!

I forgot to mention one thing... some of you may have noticed the car key I wear around my neck... that's my BMW key I wear for good luck. I used that key throughout 2012 when I survived all my "scares" but still managed to take home some cool car show awards including overall Best of Show at "Bimmerfest" which is the biggest BMW related festival in the USA. I actually authored an article in the same Eurotuner car magazine about this festival that you're welcome to check out in the link below...

On a separate note, it's great to be back here. I'm so impressed with all the new jacket styles that Aero Leather is offering plus the new USA distributor for Aero (Insurrection/Thurston Bros... awesome website they have!) If only Aero offered a turquoise horsehide color... I'd be so all over that, lol. :)

Glad to hear you made it through everything in more-or-less one piece. Sounds like it's been a rough couple of years for you.

Here's wishing you good health and many miles of hard wear on those two jackets Navin!

They couldn't be more opposite could they? One is about the most utilitarian jacket you can possibly get, the other is blinged out to the fullest! love the Aero. Don't know if I could handle the blue one myself but it certainly matches your car and once that paint starts to crackle it'll look real interesting for sure....

Hey Navin - great to have you back - a man, a car, a jacket - what else . . . OK, another jacket :D
This is the reason why I always drive black cars, because its easier to match a driver jacket!
Have fun with your amazing new jacket and drive/stay in good health my friend.

Thanks HD!! It's so good to be back and it's always a pleasure to hear from you, my friend. I hope all is well with you and your family and that you're not either directly nor indirectly affected by the government shutdown.

Thank you so much! At first glance it would seem like a rough couple of years, but I've learned that any difficult situation can be perceived in a positive way, so in that sense I've had a great couple of years getting past medical ailments that won't affect me again, and landing my dream job serving the medical community but still using my IT skills at the same time. :)

Thank you, my friend!! What a fantastic point you made about the 2 jackets being so opposite. Haha... yeah, the blue one is definitely one that is for "acquired tastes" but I'm definitely seeing the color gain more popularity with men (it was always a popular color with the ladies for sure). In some Asian cultures, turquoise is a very well respected color and symbolizes a lot. :)

Hey Windward!! So wonderful to hear from you and it's great to be back! Haha... great point you made about driving black cars... definitely a much EASIER time matching your leather jackets for sure! I see in your "location" that you're in South America now? Did you recently move there in the past couple of years or have you always been there? For some reason I thought you were living in Italy for a while.

Navin, it's so good to have you back. Your chipper never-say-die attitude was missed around here. I thought of you when you were gone and I'm really happy to hear you're doing well. You inspire me to see the good in life and I'm sure you do the same for others. Keep it up and enjoy every day.

Maybe soon I invite you to a glass of red wine - is good for the heart. :cheers1:

Hmm no mention of the jacket that I wore for you for almost 20 years to give you sucha special patina??

Hehe just kidding.

Welcome back.

I can relate to being sick since I got tendon inflammation and couldnt longer make bows or arrows, and I was the norwegian master bowyer and arrow maker several times. I had to change my job and got some kind of stomach illness wich made me nausic to the verge of throwing up everyday just as I was studying for my new career. Now almost 3 years later I still have ache in my arms and legs and cant do much of the same thing, and I still get nausia when you least expect it, I still managed to land my dreamjob, also in IT but in security. Im also very happy for the times I do feel good, its a gift.

I got my number 2 girl last december so havent really had money for a new jacket, but I do need jeans and shirts :D

Hi, Navin. Welcome back! I've been in and out of the forum myself... my jacket addiction happens to come in waves and apparently in in a "relapse." I recently purchased a Highwayman and now am putting together a Maxwell... Is this my Aero rock bottom???

In anycase, I remember reading your posts when I first found FL and I'm happy to read your update. Really puts things in perspective-- you can obsess over minutia re: jackets, but really, nothing matters more than family and health. I think I should take a break after this Maxwell and just enjoy everything for a while! Haha-- your motivational speaking will depress Aero jacket sales, I'm sure!

OT-- I have an old low mileage '99 323i that I've been wondering what to do with. It's in decent shape, but resale value is minimal. It could be a fun project car... Can I PM you for details re: your supercharger set up? That sounds like a fun money pit... lol.

Navin!!! Buddy, so glad to see you back. Man, I gotta say. I'm happy you're not matching a pink Bimmer! That metallic blue is a new addition the the 2013 blue leather blowout. I could never pull that off, but it looks good man. You're the only guy I know with a BMW that's not a complete butthead lol
Glad the family and you are doing well. Missed your posts and didn't realize how long it had been. Lots for you to catch up on. Would like to know what you think of the Ventura I got earlier this year. Just did a massive drive-fest in the northwest and wore almost nothing but that jacket. I took along three of them and only wore the other two once or twice. An RRL Deck jacket and my Aero FQHH HBD. Since you've been gone, I cleaned out most of my closet. The ones I have left are just too good.
Welcome back pal. Much love from the old crew here.
