Brownie McGhee came to New Zealand when he was 78 years old. I was at university in a relatively small town, so you can imagine my surprise when I saw the poster for his concert at the local opera house (not sure if they ever had an opera there). This broke university student somehow managed to scrape together enough cash to get a ticket.
He was magnificent! I still have the poster.

I was born in Erath county, Bob, and live only a few miles away. Can you tell me more about where you found the photo? Early sleuthing suggest that the Johnson Schoolhouse was a community name (and not an actual school) located about 4 miles south of Stephenville, TX from about 1890 to 1915. No references show up for Johnson SH on a 1923 Erath Co. soil map although there is still a Johnson cemetery near that location.

It seems it all did start with a church and school on Alarm creek built by a James Harvey Keith in 1870, later it became known as the Johnson Schoolhouse community. (How wonderful it would be to have your home place on Alarm Creek!!!). Around 1917, three small schools (including Johnson) went together to form the Lone Oak school and the Johnson Schoolhouse then faded into history. Here is a partial account from one of those wonderful local historians.

Thanks for helping me learn something today, Bob.

On Traces of Texas' Twitter feed. I was searching for a hat store's history and ran across it.

I vaguely remember that, was it around 1985?. I was at Massey in the mid 80’s.
