I think he lost a lot of his audience when he started recording as country artist Hank Wilson, in the 80's.
Was it "Hank Wilson's Back?" I know it was early '70's, and, now that I think of it, it wasn't all Hank Williams. I remember that I particularly liked "Sixpack to Go": "Tomorrow mornin's Sunday/and I know I'll be feelin' low/ so please Mr. Bartender/ I want a sixpack to go." Immortal words.

It was "Hank Wilson's Back" and I think it was 1976. It wasn't all Hank Williams. Even recorded Johnny Horton. Released vol. II in 1998.

Me too! He also did a good cover of "Jambalaya" on that LP.

Johnny Horton was one of the greatest rockabilly singers of all time with a guitarist from outer space - Grady Martin! I think I have everything they ever recorded on both vinyl and CD. Martin didn't play on all of Johnny's songs, but the ones he did play on can make your head spin.

I'm a big Horton fan and Grady Martin reminds me of Junior Brown w/o the hat. I'm sure he could've played the guit/steel.

I think I learned more about guitar leads from "Got the Bull by the Horns" than any other song. I must've listened to it thirty times in a row the night I got it, and that was on the vinyl! Hard to explain, but it taught me a lot about stripping down and simplifying an idea, and then adding flourishes where, and if, needed. All I was hearing in the early 70's were supercomplicated, meandering leads. That song was like a light in the darkness.

Was that at the Cornell Folk Festival? We all used to go to that every year.
No, it wasn't at the folk festival. It was at the Hangar Theatre in Cass Park, just a stop on Leon's tour that year. He had a full band with him, but he was at his best (I felt) when the rest of the band took a break and he played piano and sang by himself.
