January 3, 1936. 11 o'clock Central Time on a wintry Friday night. You're "at the radio," as they used to say, perhaps enjoying a nightcap and a last drag after a little shindig with friends, or just unwinding with a hot chocolate before bed. You're not planning on staying up - if you're in work, your Saturday mornings are not your own - but a little glow of music would be just the thing against the night winds' creak, while you stoke the furnace and check on the cat.
Maybe you tuned in President Roosevelt's State of the Union address earlier in the evening. He taught you a new word - "autocracy" - and you thought about that new novel people have been talking up, called It Can't Happen Here. "It" meaning all those marching morons in Germany and Italy. Is that autocracy? Or is it something to do with cars?
No matter. Spinning the glowing dial to a big-city affiliate of the mighty NBC network takes your mind to Chicago and the elegant Congress Hotel, where smooth, clean, modern music enwraps you. Who's this "Rajah of Rhythm"? His name is Benny Goodman, pied piper of what is fast becoming - altho you don't yet know it - a national music craze. Listen.

Has anybody mentioned Vince Giordano and The Nighthawks? They are one of the few traditional 1930's big bands that you can see today.

Another sample of Benny's loose-lid period, as he covers Earl Hines' Madhouse in 1935.

Fr. Hines' original from the year before, in a fat, funky four-beat BG couldn't attempt.

Mound City Blue Blowers

Tailspin Blues, a mighty tasty bit o' blue:

Mr. T (Jack Teagarden) at hei best, with a stunning chorus.

Then there is their joyful stomp, Hello, Lola!, featuring a great honking
Tenor chorus by Coleman Hawkins:

Pee Wee Russel's clarinet chorus is mighty fine, and Glen Miller (yes, that Glen Miller
acquits himself beautifully with a hot trombone chorus. Gene Krupa (who else)
lays down the beat for this side.

Away back in '24 the group was still (for the time) hot. Here we have the Blue Blowers in their original incarnation,
Red McKenzie (comb), Dick Slevin (Kazoo, he had ticklish lips), Jack Bland (Banjo), and Eddie Condon on the guitar, assisted by Frankie Trumbauer on his C-Melody Saxophone.
