How about "May I help you?"

I don't care for instant chumminess, either. I am slow to become friends with people. When someone is overly friendly, I often feel the need to push them away.

I love the Human race, it's people I can't stand!

The nametag had both my first and last name engraved on it, and we were required to wear them.
It was both unprofessional and presumptious on his part, especially as I had never actually given my name. He had to read it from my nametag.

I do admit, though, that I may have been expecting too much from a high school kid in a fast food job. -Jake

This is all offered tongue in cheek, so I am teasing a little but trying to get at lifes little interactions here.

First off you should be happy he could read the tag, many of our youth these days can not read. If you don't want people to know your name, while you are wearing a name tag, put a piece of masking tape over it to protect your annonimity.

The irony of wearing a name tag and someone reading it and using you name is like complaining the cops read your license plate prior to giving you a ticket. Or complaining someone has read your address of a house or in the phone book.

If information is offered, as in you wear the name tag, and they use it, should you get mad? Okay maybe it was a little chummy but have you ever worked fast food or retail sales? Any opportunity to raise the interaction out of the robot slave and demanding customer mode is most welcome, it brightens the day and makes you feel that you have been among your fellow human beings. When you work a daily grind of fast food sales or retail sales you need to reach out a little. Have a little compasion on a working stiff , whos day sucks. The interaction you had may have saved him from total dispair and suicide that day. Although I am glad your revulsion to such interaction did not result in any unseemly behavior on your part either.

Now, tell me how you feel about your mother and father....

Although it may be endearing most of the time, try not to use it during serious moments like:
speaking to the senior population,
funerals,
job interviews,
prayer,
talking to the police
or the judge.

Last night a young woman, 10 years my junior, broadsided my car, helped me out of my car and said, "Are you all right, hon?"

Sigh. I decided it wasn't the time or place to argue about titles.

Oh no, never!

it is usually something like "Dude, you taught ME not to talk with a mouthful of food! No wonder you are always choking!"

My mom likes to talk A LOT! And now that I am older there is a lot of role reversal...already!

Talk about adding insult to injury. Are you all right, Paisley?

Yes, I'm OK, thank you. All I really wish is that she 1) stopped at the intersection 2) looked for oncoming traffic and 3) turned into the near lane. Any one of those things would have prevented the accident. :eusa_doh: Lucky there were no pedestrians around at the moment; they'd have been killed.
