I typically avoid films that I already know will be painful to watch, but there is one that I didn't know going in and wished I had avoided: Wing Commander... worst 2 hours of my life.

A little Will Farrell goes a LONG way. I thought he was hilarious in Old School, but he got old in the legend of Ricky Bobby and I couldn't watch the Step brothers. I liked Public Enemies, Return of the King, and the Last Boy Scout, but Casablanca they ain't. Reservoir Dogs was an excellent movie, well made, acting was great, and it was just DEPRESSING as crap.

Seraphine (2008) -- an utterly slow French film about a cleaning lady who suddenly bursts out as a painter; no, not a comedy.

Jacob's Ladder (1990) -- an over-long rehash of "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" from the original "Twilight Zone." I really considered getting up and leaving the theatre.

Road to Nowhere (2010) -- the title alone should have warned me.

Once upon a time in america. The first time I saw this movie was when I was a teenager. I saw it on network television, it came on during the late late show over the weekend. I really liked watching it and considered it to be one of my favorite movies. Since I've only ever watched it on TV a few times many years ago. In 2010 I was able to borrow the movie on DVD. I knew it was going to be a little different then when I saw it on network television. And I knew they took out all the cursing and most of the sex screens, since it was being shown on network TV. Well, when I finally got to see the whole movie. I was so horrified at how the women were treated in the movie. After watching Once upon a time in america I absolutely wanted to wash my mind out with soap. This was the worst hours of my life I've ever spent. I am super glad I never had to spend a dime on this so called "film". Even the story line was not worth it and the ending were Robert De niro ends up an opium addict. I mean come on, so completely pointless. And yes the movie is very violent but I did not have any problem with that part. I really enjoyed seeing how the gangs battled it out back then.
The acting was great, too!
Plus, the sets, props, make-up/hair, and clothing were something. I absolutely drooled over them, that gets a triple A+ in my book. Other then that this movie is capital F.I.L.T.H. There is no other better way to describe this so call "movie/film".

After having recently seen Talladega Nights in its entirety I would say that Will Ferrell reached his apotheosis with Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.

Irréversible - I got this out of the DVD shop (so glad I didn't see this in the cinema and have to walk out) and to be honest I didn't know too much about it but saw that it was deemed controversial so I thought I'd have a look and see what all the fuss was about - not long into the movie someone gets their face smashed in with a fire extinguisher (horribly realistic) and not long after there was a 10 minute brutal and violent rape scene (which I was at least able to fast forward). The film was neither entertaining, educational or enlightening - just an empty, nasty experience.

Because murder and rape ARE nasty and not entertaining. If you put it this way the movie is more honest than any cowboy or james bond flic. I agree that the movie is painful to watch. No relief or happy end. *shudder* I won't watch it again too but it has a point.


I have seen quite a lot of bad movies over the time but I can't pick one atm. There was a horror movie on VHS that was censored so I couldn't follow the story line at all. People were suddenly dead or missing and scenes were jumping. I forgot the name though^^

Maybe Fabian. A german movie from the 70s that plays in the 1930s and looks just plain wrong. Fluufy hair is just the beginning. Lots of nude scenes with bushes too.

I just find showing graphic rape scenes in particular completely unnecessary - I don't need to see it being played out to get what an horrendous experience it is and with this movie it was just there to shock (it seems the Director has a reputation for wanting to shock and be controversial - I've no real interest in seeing any of his other work after this) - it didn't need to go on for 10 minutes and nor did I need to see Monica Belluci's face being smashed in or the guy's face being pulped with the fire extinguisher. Take for example the original Cape Fear with Robert Mitchum - the scene where we know he is going to rape and beat the woman lying in the bed is played so well - tension filled and terrifying - and you know what's coming but the scene fades to black. It's just not necessary to show what happens - there is nothing to be gained from seeing it being played out.

You are right. It is not necessary to show so much. I hope everybody knows how horrible this is. I really don't want to see it again and wouldn't recommend it to others. So it is perfectly fine to mention it here in this thread.
But I don't think it is completely worthless. The movie also shows that revenge (vigilantism) doesn't work and doesn't make a crime unhappen. I have seen a lot of movies who are entertaining to watch and the revengeful action is proved right and killing people is cool as long as they are "bad".

...Cobra, a Sylvester Stallone weird movie. We had to leave with the guys were all banging a couple of two-headed axes together in rhythm.

I'm pretty sure Congress and their lobbyist bosses do that.

It pains me to say this as a Francophile, but most of those wierd and depressing films that win at Cannes, that usualy have Isabelle Hubert (who I do like as an actress) in them and the plot is essentially about damaged, sad people having unpleasant looking sex and then all dying...

I thought that was most people's lives; even the ones who deny it.

I wish I'd never seen CASINO. What bilge! Three and a half hours of the spectacularly untalented Sharon Stone screaming with a bad wig, Scorsese playing DJ with endless '60s and '70s tunes on the soundtrack, and Joe Pesci and Frank Vincent doing Round 3 of their "killing one another schtick." I guess it could have been worse, with Leo DiCaprio playing the De Niro role.

Matador. Pierce Brosnan is a fantastic actor. After watching the first season of Remington Steel and reading Pierce Brosnan's biography. I was looking for a really good Pierce Brosnan movie. That is when I saw Matador I only read the summary of the movie and thought at the time this looks interesting. While watching the movie, I sat with the DVD remote in my hand fast forwarding so many screens. Afterwards I kept say to myself Why oh why did I even bother. And thank goodness I don't have to keep this movie.

Most horror films are completely made-up, and I can blow them off. However, The Exorcist is a dramatisation of real events. For that reason, it scares the dickens out of me.

I just find showing graphic rape scenes in particular completely unnecessary...

I watch many films, and particularly the "art house" kind that are really well shot, well acted, well written etc., but often controversial. I believe there is an absolutely razor-thin line when rape and violence can be used in a movie, and an almost impossibly thin line for graphic rape. When I say impossibly thin, there is only one instance that comes to mind where I can accept it as a tool for plot development (otherwise, I'm in accordance with you on this).

My example is Man Bites Dog (1992). The film is quite graphically violent in and of itself, but you find the lead character witty, even charming at times. You detest the man for what he does, but you're drawn to him. He's very much the psychopathic serial killer, i.e. Ted Bundy. However, near the end of the film, the fictional cast, crew and lead character take part in murdering a man and raping his wife. To say I was shocked...no, it was the utmost disgust; quite powerful, even paralyzing.

Upon further examination, it seemed the rape/murder scene was the ONLY thing grounding the previously playful romp. No longer was this a darkly comedic story about a charming killer, it was a sickening ordeal in which a maniac terrorizes the innocent. As a work of art, it was amazing and powerful. As an entertaining film, I wouldn't suggest it.

Otherwise, I've seen a number films, including an Eastwood western, with wanton rape scenes that could - and should - just as easily have been cut in the editing room. [huh]
